Position: Seed Production Lead

Reports to: Operations Manager

Position Type: Staff Position

Job Location: Arusha, Tanzania

Objective of the Role:

To coordinate, supervise, and actively participate in all seed production activities from nursery through seed extraction, ensuring smooth end-to-end operations. The role requires a hands-on, lead-by-example approach, working alongside teams in the field to uphold high seed quality, full traceability, strict compliance with hygiene and farm protocols, and efficient use of labour and resources.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and oversee nursery activities, block preparation, transplanting, crop maintenance, pollination, harvesting, and seed extraction processes.
  • Plan, organise, personally oversee and participate in pollination and emasculation activities in line with approved crop production programs.
  • Coordinate closely with Operations, Post-Harvest, and Quality teams to ensure seamless execution of seed production plans.
  • Manage labour allocation and productivity by leading from the front, demonstrating correct work methods, discipline and adherence to protocols on all seed production activities.
  • Oversee stock management of seed production consumables and materials.
  • Support health, safety, hygiene, compliance initiatives within seed production areas.
  • Prepare reports, highlight deviations or risks, and recommend corrective actions to management.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in agriculture, horticulture or a related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree holders require 3–5 years’ relevant hands-on experience, while Diploma holders require at least 7 years’ experience in seed, crop, or horticultural production.
  • Strong understanding of hygiene protocols, and contamination prevention measures.
  • Proven ability to lead teams through direct involvement, allocate labour effectively, and coordinate multiple production activities simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical and reporting skills, with attention to detail and traceability requirements.
  • Good communication and coordination skills with proficiency in English and Swahili languages, with the ability to work cross-functionally.
  • Computer literacy with working knowledge of MS Office applications and production record systems.
