Job Purpose:

To minimize credit losses by effectively managing the recovery of non-performing loans (NPLs). Design and execute collection strategies, negotiate repayment plans, initiate legal action where necessary, and ensure adherence to credit policy and regulatory guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:

Debt Recovery Strategy:

  • Develop and implement recovery strategies for delinquent accounts (early, late, and legal stages).
  • Prioritize recovery efforts based on aging, collateral, and debtor profile.
  • Set monthly/quarterly recovery targets for the team.

Negotiation & Restructuring:

  • Contact borrowers (phone, field visits, letters) to negotiate repayment schedules, refinancing, or settlement agreements.
  • Assess borrower financial capacity and propose viable restructuring plans within policy limits.
  • Maintain accurate records of all negotiations and agreed plans.

Legal & Collateral Management:

  • Coordinate with legal department or external lawyers to issue demand letters, file suits, execute judgments, and repossess assets.
  • Manage seized asset valuation, storage, and disposal procedures in line with bank policy.
  • Prepare and file regular reports on legal recoveries, court actions, and costs.

Portfolio Monitoring & Reporting:

  • Monitor the performance of restructured loans to prevent re-default.
  • Provide weekly dashboards on recovery rates, aging buckets, and legal provisions.
  • Identify root causes of defaults and recommend improvements to credit underwriting.

Team Supervision:

  • Lead a team of Recovery Officers, field collectors, and legal assistants.
  • Provide training on negotiation, legal compliance, and customer communication.
  • Conduct field ride-alongs and audit recovery files for quality.

Stakeholder Management:

  • Work closely with branch managers, credit analysts, and risk team to coordinate collection efforts.
  • Liaise with external credit bureaus, auctioneers, and law enforcement when required.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law, Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration.
  • Professional certification (e.g., CPA, ACCA, CRB, or Diploma in Law) is an added advantage.
  • Minimum 5 years of credit experience, with at least 3 years in debt recovery or remedial management in a bank or microfinance institution.
  • Knowledge of insolvency laws, asset repossession processes, and central bank NPL guidelines.
  • Strong negotiation, assertiveness, and analytical skills.
