Background
Britam Insurance Tanzania Limited is looking for a qualified and experienced candidate to fill the position of Underwriting Assistant based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Job Purpose
The Underwriting Assistant will be responsible for reviewing proposal forms, verifying client data, assessing proposed risks within set standards, counterchecking policy terms, and reviewing policy conditions.
The role will report to the Assistant Underwriting Manager.
Key Responsibilities
The Underwriting Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:
- Assist the Underwriting Manager in preparing competitive insurance premium quotations for presentation to clients and brokers after approval.
- Prepare insurance policy documents, endorsements, and other related documents using approved wordings.
- Provide excellent customer service by ensuring friendly, timely, and accurate service to clients in line with set standards.
- Ensure prompt and technically correct acceptance and underwriting of risks in line with treaty programs and company standards.
- Collect premiums before cover attaches for all bank clients. Any deviations must be approved by the Underwriting Manager in liaison with the COO or CEO.
- Correctly issue documents to clients within the set turnaround time.
- Prepare clear and detailed premium calculations separately for each document, with necessary cross-references in the files.
- Ensure proper filing of all necessary documents in each file.
- Promptly and appropriately respond to incoming mail, emails, phone calls, and correspondence assigned to the role.
- Set priorities and manage workflow to ensure efficient, timely, and accurate processing of transactions and other responsibilities.
- Support the achievement of set monthly budgets.
- Ensure prompt and timely processing of renewals.
- Conduct vigorous follow-up of renewals from clients, brokers, and agencies to retain organic business.
- Develop and maintain strong professional relationships with market players to maximize business placement opportunities and remain competitive.
- Interact effectively and constructively with co-workers and superiors through effective communication, cooperation, and provision of information and guidance when needed.
- Diarize work for easy follow-up and timely response.
- Take major or unusual risks only with proper guidance from the Underwriting Manager.
- Work within the approved Delegated Authority Matrix.
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
- Deliver on performance requirements as defined in the department’s strategy map, balanced scorecard, and personal scorecard.

The role will operate according to the approved Delegated Authority Matrix.
Key Performance Measures
The performance of the Underwriting Assistant will be measured based on:
- Claim ratios
- Renewal retention
- Turnaround times

Knowledge, Experience, and Qualifications Required
Applicants should have the following qualifications and experience:
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably with an insurance option
- Professional qualification in insurance, preferably a CII certificate
- 2 to 4 years of experience in the insurance industry
