Position: Vegetable Garden Manager

Department: FIELDS SERVICES

Office Location: Moshi

Reporting To: Ecosystem and Sustainability Manager

JOB SUMMARY STATEMENT:

To manage and coordinate the operations of the Organic Vegetable Garden, Livestock Pastures, and Compost Production. The role requires strong leadership, technical expertise in sustainable agriculture, and a commitment to regenerative farming. Responsibilities include planning, operational execution, infrastructure maintenance, reporting, resource management, and staff supervision.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS (DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES):

1. Administrative and Operational Management

  • Prepare and submit monthly operational, production, and administrative reports.
  • Develop annual work plans and operational schedules.
  • Maintain accurate records of production, labor, infrastructure, and input utilization.
  • Coordinate procurement of equipment, irrigation components, tools, and agricultural inputs.
  • Prepare, monitor, and manage budgets for all assigned units, ensuring cost-effective operations.
  • Monitor operational expenses and ensure efficient use of resources.
  • Coordinate with other departments to ensure timely and effective technical support.
  • Supervise staff attendance, performance and task allocation.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures and safety standards.

2. Organic Vegetable Garden Management

  • Plan and manage seasonal crop production and rotation.
  • Ensure individual crop needs are met in terms of water and nutrient availability.
  • Monitor crop performance, plant health, inputs and production efficiency.
  • Oversee harvesting, quality control and ensure proper post-harvest handling.
  • Maintain accurate yield records and develop yield forecasts.
  • Implement organic pest and disease control practices.
  • Monitor and improve soil health.
  • Monitor market trends for pricing vegetables to ensure alignment.

3. Nursery Management

  • Oversee overall nursery operations, ensuring healthy propagation and development of tree and plant species, including fruit trees, live fencing species, legumes, flowers and indigenous trees.
  • Develop and implement nursery work plans, propagation schedules, and resource allocation aligned with planting seasons.
  • Supervise nursery staff, provide technical guidance, and ensure adherence to nursery best practices and biosecurity protocols.
  • Manage infrastructure, irrigation systems, shade structures and propagation media.
  • Ensure maintenance of accurate records on seed sources, germination rates, and nursery stock.
  • Monitor progress and submit regular reports on nursery production, performance, and challenges to management.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and operational standards across all nursery activities.

4. Pasture Management (Rangeland project)

  • Develop and implement pasture management plans.
  • Monitor pasture condition, productivity, and sustainability.
  • Coordinate compost applications to improve pasture fertility.
  • Maintain pasture performance and manage records.

5. Compost Production Management

  • Manage compost production processes and quality control.
  • Monitor compost production parameters and output volumes.
  • Maintain compost production and utilization records.
  • Ensure frequent compost quality analysis.
  • Ensure sufficient compost production for operational needs.

6. Irrigation and Infrastructure Management

  • Ensure proper functioning of irrigation systems including sprinklers, hydromats, pipelines, pumps, and valves.
  • Coordinate maintenance, repairs and infrastructure improvements.
  • Maintain records of infrastructure condition and maintenance schedules.
  • Improve irrigation efficiency.

7. Staff Supervision and Management

  • Supervise operational staff across all assigned units.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to all staff across all units.
  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Ensure that all staff align with TPC Mission, Vision and Values.

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Masters or Bachelor of Science in Agronomy, Agriculture, Horticulture, or a related field.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 5 years·relevant agricultural work experience.
  • Experience working with greenhouses is an advantage.
  • Experience working in organic farming is an advantage.
  • Supervisory or management experience is required.
  • Practical experience with irrigation systems, pasture management, and compost production and nursery operations is an added advantage.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to plan and manage agricultural operations efficiently.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other office software.
  • Strong organizational, reporting, and record-keeping skills.
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili
