Job Summary

To lead and manage the bank reconciliation function, ensuring that all bank, general ledger, suspense, clearing, digital, card, mobile money and Nostro accounts are reconciled accurately and within agreed timelines. The role ensures timely identification, escalation and resolution of reconciling items, strengthens reconciliation controls, supports audit and regulatory compliance, and provides management with reliable reconciliation reporting for effective financial and operational risk management.

Responsibilities or duties

Accountability: Reconciliation Operations and Control Oversight - 45%

  • Lead daily, weekly and monthly reconciliation activities across assigned bank, GL, suspense, clearing, digital, card, mobile money and Nostro accounts.
  • Ensure reconciliations are completed, reviewed, evidenced and attested within agreed service-level timelines.
  • Oversee investigation, ageing, escalation and clearance of reconciling items, exceptions and long-outstanding balances.
  • Perform quality assurance checks to confirm completeness, accuracy, segregation of duties and adherence to reconciliation standards.
  • Maintain robust documentation, evidence and audit trails for all reconciliations and exception resolutions.

Accountability: Risk, Compliance and Reporting - 30%

  • Ensure activities comply with regulatory requirements, Enterprise-Wide Risk Management Framework, internal policies and reconciliation procedures.
  • Prepare and submit periodic reconciliation dashboards and exception reports to management, highlighting ageing, high-risk items, root causes and required actions.
  • Identify process gaps, control weaknesses and recurring exceptions, and recommend sustainable process improvements.
  • Support internal and external audits by providing reconciliations, schedules, explanations and action-plan updates.
  • Ensure self and team remain compliant with AML, sanctions, KYC, information security and operational risk requirements.

Accountability: Stakeholder Management and Issue Resolution - 15%

  • Engage branches, Head Office units, Treasury, Finance, Operations, Technology and other stakeholders to resolve reconciliation discrepancies within agreed timelines.
  • Escalate high-value, unusual, aged or high-risk reconciling items through appropriate governance channels.
  • Drive timely responses to reconciliation queries and ensure stakeholders understand required actions and deadlines.

Accountability: People Management and Continuous Improvement - 10%

  • Lead, coach and develop reconciliation staff by setting clear objectives, monitoring performance and supporting training needs.
  • Allocate workloads to maintain continuity, manage leave plans and ensure reconciliations are not compromised during absences.
  • Promote automation, standardization and simplification of reconciliation processes to improve accuracy, efficiency and control effectiveness.

Qualifications or requirements

Education requirement

Bachelor’s degree or Advanced Diploma in Accounting, Finance, Banking, Business Administration or related field.

Professional qualifications such as CPA, ACCA or equivalent will be an added advantage.

Experience needed

At least 5 years’ experience in banking operations, finance operations, reconciliations or financial controls, including 2 years in a supervisory or management role.

Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of bank reconciliations, suspense accounts, clearing accounts, Nostro accounts, GL controls and settlement processes.
  • Sound understanding of operational risk, internal controls, AML, sanctions, KYC and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Advanced analytical, investigation and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to interpret reconciliation trends, ageing reports, exception reports and root-cause analysis.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint; knowledge of core banking, reconciliation systems.
  • Strong stakeholder management, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Leadership, coaching, performance management and change-management capability.
