Responsibilities

Safety, compliance and workplace procedures

The Crane Mechanic will be responsible for demonstrating safe work practices and ensuring compliance with all relevant safety, occupational health, environmental, and operational procedures.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Demonstrate safe work practices and team membership at the workplace.
  • Comply with Standard Operating Procedures for safe work daily, including:
    • Isolation.
    • Lockout.
    • Confined space procedures.
    • Working at height procedures.
    • Lift plans.
    • Rescue plans.
  • Ensure safe work practices by:
    • Attending compulsory safety courses and meetings.
    • Using required personal protective equipment.
    • Reporting incidents and accidents.
    • Ensuring full adherence to safety, occupational health, and environmental policies.
    • Following all relevant policies, procedures, and guidelines.
    • Ensure equipment isolation where required.
    • Adhere to working at height and confined space standards and procedures.
    • Conduct pre-start checks and inspections.
    • Perform hazard identification and risk assessment.
  • Crane operation and lifting support

The successful candidate will support safe crane operation and lifting activities in line with equipment limits and operational requirements.

Duties include:

  • Signal or verbally direct workers engaged in hoisting and moving loads to ensure the safety of workers and materials.
  • Operate the main and deck cranes within the designed Safe Working Load limits.
  • Operate cranes in accordance with de-rating tables applicable to existing weather and sea state conditions.
  • Drive the assigned crane.
  • Perform routine checks on cranes before use.
  • Conduct structural and ground inspections prior to lifting when required.

Equipment inspection and maintenance

The Crane Mechanic will be responsible for carrying out scheduled maintenance, inspections, repairs, and preventive maintenance to ensure crane equipment remains safe and efficient.

Key duties include:

  • Perform equipment maintenance schedules.
  • Conduct equipment colour tagging every quarter.
  • Ensure inspection of all lifting equipment is conducted daily before use.
  • Ensure quarterly colour tagging is recorded in the respective logbooks.
  • Inspect mobile and stationary cranes as required.
  • Carry out mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance to maintain crane equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Support achievement of production and cost targets through effective maintenance.
  • Ensure maintenance practices result in maximum equipment availability.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections according to maintenance requirements.
  • Ensure preventive maintenance compliance.
  • Follow up on outstanding maintenance and repairs.

Troubleshooting and corrective maintenance

The role requires the ability to diagnose, repair, and resolve mechanical issues affecting crane availability and performance.

Responsibilities include:

  • Carry out troubleshooting, fault finding, and corrective maintenance.
  • Resolve unplanned equipment unavailability events.
  • Follow all maintenance procedures.

Qualification requirements

Candidates should have the following qualifications:

  • Mechanics Trade Certification, Full Technician’s Certificate, VETA Grade One, or equivalent qualification.
  • Sound knowledge of mining safety regulations and best practices.

Experience and competencies needed

Candidates should have the following experience and competencies:

  • At least 5 years of experience in a maintenance role responsible for crane mechanics.
  • Experience in open-cast mining is essential.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
  • Strong hazard identification and risk assessment skills.
  • Ability to understand technical drawings and manuals.
  • Valid light vehicle manual-class driving license.
  • Strong technical and strategic planning-related experience and background.
