Responsibilities or duties
Safety and compliance
- Ensure strict adherence to all safety protocols, regulations, and environmental standards for backfill operations.
- Promote a strong safety culture in line with Barrick’s commitment to zero harm.
- Maintain awareness and application of relevant mine health and safety requirements.
Operational management
- Oversee daily backfill activities, including preparation, transportation, and placement of backfill material.
- Ensure backfill operations are carried out efficiently, safely, and according to operational plans.
- Coordinate the use of pumps, pipelines, heavy machinery, and related backfill equipment.
Planning and scheduling
- Coordinate backfill schedules with overall project timelines.
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, and other superintendents to prevent delays.
- Support planning activities to ensure the stope filling sequence is achieved effectively.
Quality control and assurance
- Implement quality assurance and quality control measures for backfill operations.
- Ensure backfill materials meet required engineering specifications, including strength and compaction standards.
- Monitor mix design, paste fill quality, and cemented aggregate fill requirements.
Resource management
- Manage and coordinate staff, equipment, and materials required for backfill operations.
- Support procurement and availability of materials needed for continuous backfill activities.
- Ensure resources are used effectively to meet operational targets.
Personnel supervision
- Hire, train, supervise, and support the backfill team.
- Provide leadership and technical guidance to subordinate supervisors, operators, and laborers.
- Mentor team members and motivate crews to implement company directives.
Reporting and documentation
- Prepare detailed reports on project status, progress, costs, and safety incidents.
- Maintain accurate documentation related to backfill operations.
- Report technical, operational, and safety matters to relevant management teams.
Problem-solving
- Identify and resolve technical or operational issues that arise during the backfill process.
- Provide practical solutions to ensure continuity of operations.
- Support continuous improvement of backfill systems and processes.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
- Degree in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Specialization in Ground Control, Geotechnical Engineering, or Rock Mechanics is preferred.
- Valid Tanzanian driver’s license.
- Mine Overseers Certificate of Competency or equivalent will be an added advantage.
- Mines Health and Safety Act awareness.
Experience needed
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in an underground mining environment.
- At least 5 years of post-graduate industry-specific experience, such as paste fill design and placement.
- Significant experience in a supervisory or management role.
- Proven ability to lead, mentor, and motivate teams.
- Ability to work as part of a team and maintain a “can do” attitude.
- Ability to motivate crews to act on company directives, regardless of personal opinion.
- Strong expertise in backfill processes, including:
- Paste fill operations.
- Cemented aggregate fill operations.
- Quality assurance and quality control.
- Mix design.
- Strong understanding of mining processes, including:
- Ground control management plans.
- Mine layouts.
- Underground mining operations.
- Experience in planning, monitoring, and optimizing paste reticulation to enable the stope filling sequence.
- Strong problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Strong commitment to safety regulations and industry standards.
