Job Summary:

The Pharmaceutical Technician is a critical support role responsible for assisting pharmacists in the preparation, dispensing, and distribution of medications. This role ensures that patients receive the correct pharmaceuticals in a safe, sterile, and timely manner. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proficient in mathematics, and adheres strictly to regulatory compliance and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Medication Preparation & Dispensing:

• Prepare and package prescription medications under the direct supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.
• Perform sterile and non-sterile compounding of pharmaceuticals (IV admixtures, total parenteral nutrition [TPN], chemotherapy agents).
• Pre-package bulk medications into unit-dose packaging and label appropriately.

Inventory Management:

• Maintain accurate inventory levels; receive, sort, and stock pharmaceutical supplies.
• Rotate stock to ensure expiration dates are monitored and expired drugs are removed.
• Manage automated dispensing cabinets (e.g., Pyxis, Omnicell) in hospital settings.

Administrative & Customer Service:

• Process insurance claims and manage patient billing data.
• Answer phone calls, triage prescription refill requests, and communicate with nurses and physicians regarding order clarifications (escalating to the Pharmacist as needed).
• Maintain patient records and confidentiality (HIPAA compliance).

Quality Assurance:

• Clean and maintain laboratory equipment and sterile work environments.
• Adhere to USP and guidelines for sterile and hazardous drug handling.
• Perform daily calibration of pharmacy equipment.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Education:

High School Diploma or GED required. Completion of an accredited Pharmacy Technician program preferred.

Certification:

Active State Board of Pharmacy Registration/License. PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) certification required.

Experience:

Minimum 1-2 years of experience in a hospital or retail pharmacy setting.

Skills:

Strong mathematical skills (metric system, conversions); proficiency in pharmacy software (e.g., Epic, Cerner, or PioneerRX); ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 30 lbs.
