The successful candidate will be responsible to supervise the safe, efficient and compliant handling, storage and movement of all chemicals used in the plant as well to manage chemical inventory within process areas and coordinate logistics with the main stores to ensure timely availability of required chemicals.

Specific Job Responsibilities:

  • Ensure accurate stock control to minimize losses, pilferage and wastage.
  • Optimize ordering and usage of chemicals to reduce costs without compromising process efficiency
  • Support cost saving initiatives by monitoring consumption trends and recommending improvements.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for auditing, compliance and financial reconciliation.
  • Ensures that the Chemical Handling and Storage area is operated and maintained as prescribed and that chemicals are distributed as needed
  • Promote discipline, accountability and continuous improvement within the handling.
  • Foster teamwork and effective communication between plant operations, stores and logistics teams
  • Process deviations and equipment breakdowns are attended to timeously to achieve the above.
  • The Chemical Handling and Storage area performance, safety, housekeeping, quality and environment standards are achieved and always maintained, co-ordinating such activities as necessary with the Production Team Lead.
  • Ensure all processes are executed in accordance with ISO 22000 and local good practices for safety, health, environment and quality. This specifically includes the use of required personal protective equipment and ensuring all plant operations are executed with safety in mind.
  • Ensure timely supply of the right chemicals to process operators and departments.
  • Liaise with procurement and stores to coordinate deliveries, returns and stock adjustments.
  • Guarantee compliance with statutory requirements for chemical handling, storage and transportation.
  • Provide reliable data to management, safety teams and regulatory bodies as required.
  • Oversee receipt, labelling, storage and issue of chemicals from the main stores to the plant.
  • Ensure safe transfer, loading/unloading and distribution of chemicals across plant areas and oversee a team during this process.
  • Monitor stock levels daily and trigger timely requisitions to avoid stockouts.
  • Maintain chemical safety data sheets (MSDS), labelling and segregation in line with HSE requirements.
  • Track shelf life and ensure proper disposal of expired or obsolete chemicals.
  • Conduct routine inspections of storage tanks, drums and packaging integrity.
  • Ensure accurate record keeping in inventory systems (manual and digital).
  • Adjusts and alterations to the storage conditions in conjunction with the Production Team Lead, to ensure Chemical Handling area is operating as per procedure to ensure all stakeholders have adequate supply of chemicals as needed.
  • Conducts visual checks and inspections of the Chemical Handling and Storage and associated utilities.
  • Together with the Production Team Lead and Logistics Foreman, diagnose the cause of problems/breakdowns by troubleshooting.
  • Responsible for shutting down and starting up the Chemical Handling area as per procedure.
  • Adheres to safety procedures, maintains the plants housekeeping, quality and environmental standards.
  • Trains, as required, plant personnel on the operations within the ETP.
  • Carries out any other duties relating to the plant

Qualifications

  • Form 6 or A Level Secondary Education with Mathematics and Science
  • Diploma in Chemical Engineering / Chemistry /Production Management is an added advantage
  • Exposure to a production environment
  • Experience in a chemical manufacturing facility
  • Comprehensive literacy and numeracy knowledge
