OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE

The Lead, Exploration is responsible for planning, coordinating and delivering the operational, logistics, procurement and field support services required for the successful execution of Greenfield exploration programmes across Tanzania. Operating in a roster-based field environment, the role ensures exploration teams are provided with the personnel, equipment, transport, camp facilities, materials and contractor support necessary to achieve exploration objectives safely, efficiently and cost-effectively. Working closely with the Exploration Manager, Senior Geologist and technical teams, the incumbent provides operational leadership across logistics, procurement, camp operations, fleet management, inventory control and field execution while ensuring compliance with Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) requirements, corporate governance standards and statutory obligations. The role focuses on operational deliverables over a three to six-month planning horizon while contributing to exploration programmes extending up to one year.

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

Operational

  • Lead the planning, coordination and execution of operational support activities for Greenfield exploration programmes.
  • Coordinate daily field operations to ensure exploration activities are executed safely, efficiently and in accordance with approved work programmes.
  • Facilitate daily work planning meetings, assign operational tasks and monitor execution against established priorities.
  • Coordinate cross-functional activities between geology, field technicians, administration, logistics and contractors to ensure seamless programme delivery.
  • Develop and promote a high-performance culture focused on operational excellence, accountability and continuous improvement.

Logistics, Procurement and Supply Chain Management

  • Plan, coordinate and manage all logistics supporting exploration programmes, including transport, flights, accommodation, camps, provisioning and field movements.
  • Coordinate procurement activities to ensure timely acquisition of equipment, materials and services in accordance with approved budgets, procurement procedures and corporate governance requirements.
  • Ensure uninterrupted availability of fuel, water, food supplies, sampling consumables, personal protective equipment (PPE) and operational materials.
  • Monitor supplier and contractor performance to ensure delivery of quality goods and services within agreed timelines.
  • Identify opportunities to optimise logistics, procurement processes and operational costs while maintaining service quality and operational continuity.

Field Operations and Technical Support

  • Coordinate operational support for drilling programmes, sampling activities, site preparation, access development and rehabilitation programmes.
  • Ensure exploration activities are completed in accordance with approved work programmes and technical requirements provided by the supervising geologists.
  • Supervise field support personnel, drivers and geotechnicians to ensure safe and efficient execution of operational activities.
  • Support geological teams by ensuring field infrastructure, logistics and equipment requirements are available to achieve exploration objectives.
  • Coordinate emergency preparedness activities and participate in emergency response exercises where require

Fleet, Camp and Asset Management

  • Manage exploration camps to ensure appropriate standards of safety, hygiene, environmental protection and operational readiness.
  • Coordinate the deployment, maintenance, servicing and security of exploration vehicles, equipment and field assets.
  • Monitor equipment utilisation and asset condition, ensuring preventative maintenance, repairs and replacement programmes are effectively implemented.
  • Ensure exploration camps, vehicles and operational infrastructure remain compliant with company standards and statutory requirements.

Inventory and Materials Management

  • Lead inventory planning and control for exploration equipment, sampling materials, PPE, consumables and operational supplies.
  • Maintain effective inventory systems covering receipt, storage, issue, stock reconciliation and disposal of materials.
  • Ensure exploration samples and associated materials are managed under appropriate chain-of-custody and traceability requirements.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and recommend replenishment requirements to avoid operational interruptions

Leadership, Capability Development and People Management

  • Supervise, coach and develop field personnel, drivers, contractors and technical support staff.
  • Ensure personnel possess the required competencies, licences and certifications to perform assigned duties.
  • Facilitate on-the-job training in field operations, sampling procedures, equipment operation, quality assurance practices and safe work procedures.
  • Monitor workforce performance and implement corrective or developmental actions where required
  • Foster effective communication, teamwork and collaboration across multidisciplinary exploration teams.

Safety, Health, Environment and Community

  • Demonstrate visible leadership in promoting a proactive safety culture across all exploration operations.

  • Conduct field inspections, pre-start meetings, hazard identification and risk assessments to ensure critical controls remain effective.
  • Ensure Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Fatal Hazard Management controls and Fitness for Work requirements are consistently implemented.
  • Report incidents promptly and ensure corrective actions are implemented and monitored.
  • Promote environmentally responsible operational practices, rehabilitation activities and positive community engagement.

  • Support the Exploration Manager in developing operational work plans, logistics schedules and resource requirements.
  • Monitor operational expenditure against approved budgets and identify opportunities for cost optimisation without compromising safety or operational effectiveness.

  • Maintain accurate operational records, permits, manifests, risk assessments and logistical documentation to support compliance and audit requirements.

Education & Qualification

Experience

  • A minimum of seven years of experience within the exploration industry at an operational level.
  • A background in service delivery/logistics.
