The Instrumentation Mechanician role is critical to ensuring the reliability and efficiency of the mine’s instrumentation and control systems. The position focuses on maintaining, repairing, calibrating, and troubleshooting control instruments and automation systems that support continuous plant operations. Successful candidates will play a key role in minimizing downtime and ensuring that all instrumentation systems operate safely and effectively.
Responsibilities
The Instrumentation Mechanician will be responsible for maintaining and repairing instrumentation and control systems to ensure smooth and uninterrupted mining operations. The role requires expertise in automation systems, fault diagnosis, calibration, and adherence to safety procedures while working closely with other departments to support plant performance.
- Perform repair and maintenance activities on instrumentation and control systems according to specifications and instructions
- Attend to both planned maintenance and emergency instrumentation duties within the section
- Collaborate and maintain effective working relationships with other departments
- Maintain, program, and troubleshoot PLC and SCADA/HMI systems
- Utilize knowledge of optic fibre and wireless network systems to support operations
- Maintain and calibrate control and instrumentation equipment, including flow meters, scales, pH meters, analysers, and related instruments
- Carry out fault finding and troubleshooting on instrumentation systems
- Assist with additional duties assigned by the Supervisor or Head of Department
- Ensure compliance with all health and safety requirements and promote good housekeeping practices
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance plant reliability and performance
Qualifications
Candidates for this position should possess strong technical knowledge in instrumentation, automation, and control systems, preferably gained within the mining industry. Practical experience in troubleshooting, calibration, and industrial automation systems is essential for success in this role.
- Recognized Trade Diploma as a qualified Instrumentation Mechanician or Technician
- Minimum of three (3) years of relevant post-trade work experience, preferably in the mining industry
- Experience and knowledge in fault finding and troubleshooting
- Experience in process automation and PID control systems
- Experience in calibration of field instruments
- Experience working with SCADA and PLC systems
- Knowledge of VSD and Soft Starter systems
- Experience with densitometers, weigh feeders, and process instrumentation equipment
- Knowledge of level and pressure transmitters
- Experience in cable joining and termination, including fibre optic cables
- Knowledge of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) policies, risk assessments, and working at heights procedures
- Ability to plan and organize assigned tasks effectively
- Proficiency in English communication skills
- Possession of a valid driver’s license
