Job Summary
The Deputy Project Director will support the Project Director in planning, executing, and commissioning large-scale renewable energy projects. The role ensures project delivery within schedule, budget, and compliance with technical, environmental, and regulatory standards. This position serves as a key decision-maker, managing multi-disciplinary teams, contractors, and stakeholder engagement.
Key Responsibilities / Duties
1. Strategic & Operational Leadership
- Assist the Project Director in developing and executing the project strategy, roadmap, and implementation plan.
- Lead project management meetings, progress reporting, and governance reviews.
- Provide guidance on risk management, mitigation strategies, and contingency planning.
2. Technical Oversight
- Supervise engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractors to ensure compliance with project specifications and standards.
- Monitor the technical performance of renewable energy components (solar PV, wind turbines, hydro systems, storage technologies).
- Oversee testing, commissioning, and operational readiness of renewable energy systems.
3. Budget & Financial Management
- Support cost estimation, budget preparation, and expenditure tracking.
- Monitor cash flow, cost overruns, and recommend corrective actions.
- Liaise with finance teams, investors, and funders on financial reporting and compliance.
4. Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
- Ensure compliance with international safety, environmental, and quality standards.
- Promote a strong HSE culture across all sites and contractors.
- Oversee environmental and social impact mitigation, community engagement, and biodiversity conservation.
5. Stakeholder & Government Relations
- Engage with government authorities, regulators, and local communities to secure and maintain permits, licenses, and approvals.
- Maintain strong relationships with investors, partners, and other stakeholders.
6. Quality Assurance & Control
- Establish QA/QC protocols for engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning.
- Ensure timely identification, reporting, and resolution of non-conformities.
7. Project Controls & Reporting
- Implement project control systems including schedule management, risk tracking, and change management.
- Prepare progress reports, KPI dashboards, and risk assessments for senior management.
8. Capacity Building & Local Content
- Promote local employment, training, and skills development programs.
- Support partnerships with local suppliers, SMEs, and technical institutions.
9. Commissioning & Handover
- Develop and supervise commissioning plans for renewable energy systems.
- Ensure operational readiness and smooth handover to operations and maintenance teams.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Master’s degree in Renewable Energy, Electrical/Mechanical/Civil Engineering, or Project Management.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in managing solar, thermal, hydro, or other energy projects.
- Experience in constructing PV plants with an aggregate capacity exceeding 4 MW (with individual plants above 2 MW, and at least one plant above 4 MW).
- Proven experience managing renewable energy projects (solar, wind, hydro, hybrid).
- Strong knowledge of EPC contracts, project finance, and risk management.
- Familiarity with local regulations, permitting processes, and environmental compliance.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Willingness to travel to project sites and work in remote or challenging environments.
