The key purpose of this role is to operate the packaging process in order to achieve minimal variability in product quality and maximum throughput while minimizing waste.

Key outputs and responsibilities

Packaging process operation

The Packaging Operator will be responsible for operating the packaging process effectively and efficiently. Key responsibilities include:

  • Operating machines during start-up, shutdown, and running operations.
  • Managing waste during packaging operations.
  • Carrying out brand and pack changes.
  • Monitoring production process performance.
  • Controlling inputs during the production process.
  • Taking corrective action when required.
  • Responding quickly to out-of-control situations.

Safety, quality, and maintenance

The role requires maintaining high standards of safety, hygiene, and product quality. Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Conducting in-depth cleaning.
  • Performing first-level maintenance.
  • Conducting quality checks.
  • Maintaining quality standards throughout the packaging process.
  • Demonstrating a disciplined work ethic and passion for maintaining quality.

Teamwork, communication, and problem solving

The Packaging Operator will also be expected to participate actively in team activities and contribute to continuous improvement. Responsibilities include:

  • Participating in team activities.
  • Communicating with customers and suppliers.
  • Contributing to problem solving.
  • Supporting VPO routine execution.
  • Demonstrating experience in driving commercial decisions in a packaging hall, including financial, operational, and people-related decisions.

Required experience and competencies

Applicants should demonstrate the following:

  • Experience working in a packaging process environment.
  • Ability to operate packaging machinery effectively.
  • Alertness and quick response to out-of-control situations.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Good problem-solving ability.
  • A superior performance track record.
  • A disciplined work ethic.
  • Passion for maintaining quality.
  • Demonstrated understanding of relevant legislation, specifically health and safety and labor legislation.
  • Demonstrated experience in driving commercial decisions in a packaging hall, including financial, operational, and people-related matters.
  • Ability to work shifts.

Minimum requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Diploma or degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Trade test qualification in Mechanical or Electrical.
  • Experience in working in a packaging process environment.
  • Ability to work shifts.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Problem-solving ability.
  • Alertness and ability to respond quickly to out-of-control situations.
