Background

AngloGold Ashanti (“AGA”), a leading global mining company, boasts a vibrant and inviting culture that beckons new individuals to join its ranks. Embracing diversity and inclusion, the company fosters an environment where every employee is valued and celebrated for their unique perspectives and contributions. Collaboration and teamwork are at the core of their culture, promoting a sense of unity and shared goals amongst employees. Additionally, AngloGold Ashanti prioritizes employee growth and development, offering ample opportunities for career advancement and professional enrichment.

Joining this dynamic organization means becoming a part of a culture that champions innovation, sustainability, and a commitment to making a meaningful impact in the mining industry and the broader community. The AGA Africa Business Unit is seeking experienced and self-motivated persons to join our team.

The Opportunity

Join Geita Gold Mining Limited as the Manager of UG Infrastructure and Heavy Mobile Equipment (HME) within our Geita division, located at the Geita mining site. In this pivotal role, you will collaborate closely with the Director of Asset Management and Engineering to drive the successful delivery of site targets by developing and implementing industry-leading maintenance strategies and practices for underground mining equipment and infrastructure. Your expertise will play a critical role in enhancing underground operations across safety, operational efficiency, and equipment reliability, thereby supporting the sustainable growth and success of our mining endeavours.

This position carries the key responsibility of overseeing all major maintenance and service operations—both routine and nonroutine—on Geita Gold Mining’s underground mobile equipment. You will also lead the design, installation, and continuous upkeep of underground infrastructure at Star, Comet, and other underground mines as necessary. The role encompasses accountability for major equipment rebuilds and extends oversight to the welding and tyre bay workshops, as well as the Light Mechanical Engineering (LME) activities supporting the SC workshop.

Key Accountabilities

  • Champion safety by identifying and managing workplace hazards related to underground equipment and infrastructure maintenance, ensuring that teams are competent, well-trained, and adhere to safety protocols.
  • Provide expert technical guidance and actionable advice to maintenance leaders and trades personnel dedicated to underground mining fleets, fostering continuous improvement.
  • Develop comprehensive scopes of work for major UG mobile equipment projects, including full rebuilds, ensuring alignment with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) guidelines and operational priorities.
  • Plan and execute activities related to underground infrastructure that align strategically with the mining plan and both short- and long-term service requirements.
  • Implement and enforce best practices for equipment maintenance and infrastructure installation to uphold OEM standards and optimize durability and safety.
  • Analyze equipment failures to identify premature component issues, institute warranty claims where appropriate, and develop preventative strategies to minimize downtime.
  • Maintain and update training registers for maintenance teams, actively monitor skill levels, and provide on-the-job training to sustain and uplift technical capabilities.
  • Review, maintain, and execute a rolling five-year replacement strategy and capital budget for underground equipment and infrastructure, ensuring financial prudence and operational readiness.
  • Oversee timely execution of equipment rebuilds, ensuring forecasts and project plans are met with high quality.
  • Lead equipment selection and procurement processes, ensuring new and replacement equipment meets operational needs and aligns with AngloGold Ashanti standards.
  • Coordinate with the underground mining team to guarantee the availability, reliability, and safety of mobile equipment and infrastructure, optimizing maintenance schedules alongside mining priorities.
  • Drive root cause analysis investigations for major component failures and meticulously document repair activities to inform future maintenance planning.
  • Support efficient work scheduling, balancing routine maintenance with unforeseen repairs to maximize equipment uptime and operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with the planning team to optimize inventory management and materials availability through Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) arrangements with OEMs.
  • Ensure all maintenance actions discovered via inspections are properly recorded and executed according to schedule, with thorough documentation and closure of work orders.
  • Participate in an on-call roster to provide expert support during breakdowns and reliability challenges, ensuring responsive problem resolution.

Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure all electricians involved in high-voltage (HV) and medium-voltage (MV) installations receive appropriate training and certifications, maintaining strict adherence to electrical safety standards.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for routine activities within your unit to enhance consistency and safety.
  • Drive a comprehensive hazard identification and mitigation program, including management of major hazards and critical controls, to safeguard people and assets.
  • Implement and maintain a 5S workplace organisation program inspired by Six Sigma–Lean principles to foster a clean, efficient, and safe working environment.
  • Maintain awareness and management of important compliance frameworks such as SOX controls, declarations of conflict of interest, delegation of authority, and timely reporting obligations.

Budgeting and Cost Control

  • Develop and manage a 3-year rolling budget forecast for underground infrastructure and heavy mobile equipment, ensuring alignment with the mine plan and strategic objectives.
  • Partner with the reliability engineering and asset management teams to implement cost reduction initiatives through defect elimination, condition monitoring, and reliability improvement programs.
  • Provide robust contract management oversight, including ensuring safety, quality standards, and cost controls are met by contractors supporting your areas.
  • Handle warranty claims, dispute resolution, and quality assurance to maintain cost efficiency and protect asset investments.
  • Track component lifecycles and ensure rebuild projects are planned and executed cost-effectively to maximize asset availability.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

This role involves a hands-on approach requiring physical fitness to perform maintenance work directly on heavy underground machinery as needed. The work environment includes exposure to loud noises, contaminants, and physical hazards such as slips, trips, and falls, demanding vigilance, attention to detail, and strict adherence to personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols.

About You

We are searching for a highly experienced and dedicated professional who thrives in a challenging environment and is passionate about optimizing underground mining infrastructure and mobile equipment reliability. The ideal candidate will exhibit a collaborative mindset, a commitment to continuous improvement, and the ability to lead and mentor diverse teams.

Qualifications and Certifications

  • A university degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent qualification. Vocational training complemented by substantial hands-on experience in mobile equipment maintenance will also be considered.

Experience and Skills

  • Minimum 15 years of direct hands-on experience in maintenance of heavy mining mobile equipment, with at least six years in a senior management role within underground mining.
  • Experience with Caterpillar (CAT) and Sandvik UG equipment maintenance is highly advantageous.
  • Strong leadership capabilities with proven success in managing multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, including deep knowledge of root cause analysis techniques, warranty management, and equipment lifecycle optimisation.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing and managing maintenance plans, capital projects, and budgeting within a mining context.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels and foster a culture of safety and excellence.
