Job Summary
Our client is seeking an experienced and hands-on Civil Supervisor to supervise and coordinate day-to-day civil construction activities within a large-scale agribusiness and estate development project in Morogoro. The successful candidate will oversee civil works related to plantation infrastructure, roads, irrigation systems, reservoirs, drainage systems, water-retaining structures, buildings, and associated infrastructure. The role will ensure that construction activities are completed safely, efficiently, and according to approved drawings, specifications, quality standards, method statements, and project schedules.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise daily civil construction activities and effectively allocate work to labour teams and subcontractors.
- Ensure all construction activities are carried out according to approved drawings, specifications, method statements, and project requirements.
- Monitor manpower, construction equipment, materials, productivity, and daily site activities.
- Coordinate with Site Engineers, Surveyors, QA/QC teams, HSE personnel, subcontractors, and other project disciplines.
- Supervise earthworks including site clearing, excavation, filling, grading, embankment, backfilling, and soil compaction.
- Monitor the construction of approach roads, internal roads, bunds, drains, culverts, and related infrastructure.
- Verify formation levels, slopes, widths, alignment, and other site measurements in coordination with the Surveyor.
- Supervise the construction of irrigation canals, intake structures, screen chambers, reservoirs, drainage systems, pipelines, and related water infrastructure.
- Monitor excavation, bedding, reinforcement, formwork, concrete works, masonry, waterproofing, and lining works.
- Ensure correct levels, gradients, dimensions, and hydraulic profiles for irrigation and water infrastructure.
- Supervise reservoir lining systems, including clay lining and geomembrane lining where applicable.
- Supervise reinforced concrete works, including reinforcement fixing, formwork, concreting, vibration, finishing, and curing.
- Inspect reinforcement spacing, lap lengths, anchorage, cover, positioning, and formwork stability before concrete placement.
- Coordinate concrete cube testing and other required inspections.
- Supervise building works including foundations, columns, beams, slabs, masonry, plastering, flooring, roofing, waterproofing, and external works.
- Coordinate civil construction activities with structural, mechanical, electrical, and other disciplines.
- Coordinate with Surveyors for setting out and verify levels, coordinates, alignment, dimensions, slopes, and elevations before construction begins.
- Inspect workmanship and ensure materials used on site comply with approved specifications and quality requirements.
- Identify defective or non-conforming work and coordinate corrective actions with QA/QC personnel.
- Enforce site HSE requirements, including appropriate PPE and safe practices for excavation, lifting, concreting, working at height, and equipment operations.
- Stop unsafe work where necessary and immediately report significant safety concerns to the responsible Engineer or HSE personnel.
- Monitor daily construction progress against the approved project programme.
- Maintain accurate daily records covering manpower, equipment, materials, completed work quantities, concrete pours, excavation/filling quantities, delays, and site challenges.
- Report project progress, operational constraints, and site issues to the Irrigation Manager.
- Ensure required construction materials are available before commencement of scheduled activities.
- Monitor proper storage and handling of cement, reinforcement, aggregates, pipes, blocks, formwork materials, and other construction materials.
- Monitor equipment utilization and help minimize idle time, material wastage, and unnecessary project delays.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Diploma or Degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Construction, or a closely related field.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant civil construction/site supervision experience.
- Previous experience in sugar projects, irrigation, roads, reservoirs, drainage systems, or water-retaining structures is preferred.
- Experience working within African or Tanzanian construction environments will be an added advantage.
- Strong practical knowledge of earthworks, soil compaction, and road construction.
- Good understanding of irrigation canals, drainage systems, reservoirs, and water-retaining structures.
- Strong knowledge of reinforced concrete construction, reinforcement, formwork, masonry, and plastering.
- Ability to read and interpret civil and structural drawings.
- Practical understanding of surveying, setting out, quantity measurement, construction materials, and testing.
- Knowledge of method statements, Inspection and Test Plan (ITP) requirements, and construction safety.
- Strong site supervision, discipline, and leadership abilities.
- Ability to effectively manage labour teams and subcontractors.
- Strong communication, coordination, and practical problem-solving skills.
- Good understanding of construction sequencing and productivity.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet demanding project deadlines.
- Willingness to work at project sites and extended site hours when required.
