About the Role
DP World is seeking an experienced and results-driven Sustainability Specialist to drive, manage and monitor site-level environmental management systems, operational sustainability programmes and compliance frameworks at the DP World Dar es Salaam Terminal.
The position will report directly to the Sustainability Manager and functionally to the Head of HSE Executive. The role will ensure alignment with Tanzanian environmental legislation, international environmental standards and DP World’s global Ports and Terminals sustainability strategies.
The Sustainability Specialist will also serve as a subject-matter expert supporting environmental sustainability programmes, HSE reporting, People and Culture initiatives and community sustainability projects.
Key Responsibilities
Regulatory Compliance and Auditing
- Ensure compliance with local, regional and international environmental regulations and standards, including NEMC, EMA, IMO, IFC Performance Standards and ISO 14001.
- Lead and support internal and third-party environmental audits.
- Ensure corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) are implemented effectively.
Environmental Risk Assessment and Impact Analysis
- Conduct comprehensive environmental risk assessments.
- Identify and evaluate potential environmental impacts associated with port operations, including dredging, cargo handling, bunkering and vessel emissions.
- Assess potential impacts on air, water, marine ecosystems and soil quality.
Hazardous Waste and Materials Management
- Ensure proper identification, storage, labelling, handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Ensure compliance with the IMDG Code, HAZMAT requirements and applicable local environmental regulations.
- Maintain appropriate documentation and segregation of hazardous materials.
- Support pollution prevention initiatives.
Sustainability and Resource Efficiency
Lead initiatives aimed at reducing the terminal’s environmental footprint.
Implement programmes focused on:
- Waste reduction
- Energy conservation
- Water conservation
- Circular economy initiatives
- Carbon emissions tracking
Track greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with the GHG Protocol.
People and Culture Sustainability
- Serve as a core panel member and technical lead for People Department sustainability initiatives.
- Support employee engagement campaigns.
- Contribute technical expertise to community ESG and sustainability projects.
Permit to Work and Operational Oversight
- Support and enforce environmental controls through the Permit to Work (PTW) system.
- Monitor high-risk activities such as fueling, hot work and confined-space entry near environmentally sensitive areas.
- Ensure environmental controls are incorporated into operational activities.
Emergency Preparedness and Spill Response
- Develop and implement spill response plans for hazardous material leaks and marine pollution incidents.
- Oversee the availability and condition of spill response kits.
- Lead environmental emergency drills and simulations.
Environmental Monitoring and ISO 14001 EMS
Manage continuous monitoring programmes covering key environmental parameters, including:
- Air emissions
- Marine water quality
- Wastewater discharge
- Noise levels
Maintain environmental documentation, aspect-impact registers and procedures under the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS).
Stakeholder and Regulatory Liaison
- Act as a key point of contact with environmental regulators, NGOs and inspection authorities.
- Prepare and present environmental performance data.
- Support environmental permitting processes.
- Respond to regulatory inquiries and inspections.
Environmental Training and Awareness
- Design and deliver environmental training for employees, contractors and visitors.
- Provide training on environmental policies, site-specific risks, spill response and good environmental practices.
- Promote a proactive environmental, safety and sustainability culture.
Contractor and Vendor Compliance
- Ensure third-party contractors comply with DP World environmental standards.
- Monitor compliance with permit conditions and operational best practices during terminal activities.
Regional Reporting
- Prepare technical updates on site environmental performance.
- Report waste management metrics and operational sustainability performance.
- Present shared learnings during weekly Ports & Terminals Regional Efficiency meetings.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sustainability Management, Environmental Engineering or a related discipline.
- A Master’s degree is an added advantage.
Skills and Experience
- 2–4 years of experience in environmental management, ESG reporting, sustainability consulting or operational HSE.
- Experience in port, maritime, logistics or industrial environments is preferred.
- Certification in ISO 14001 EMS, NEBOSH Environmental Certificate or LEED Green Associate is highly desirable.
- Strong knowledge of Tanzanian environmental legislation, including NEMC and EMA requirements.
- Knowledge of IFC Performance Standards and World Bank Environmental and Social Standards (ESS) frameworks.
Technical proficiency in:
- GHG Protocol modelling
- Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
- Waste management audit frameworks
- Environmental sampling
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Ability to use reporting dashboards for performance tracking.
Excellent command of English and Swahili.
Strong executive presentation and communication skills.
Strong leadership and influencing skills.
Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and drive a sustainability culture.
