Position
Operator 3, Longhole Drill
Objective of the role
The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out underground production drilling of precise blast holes into ore bodies, as well as drilling service holes and cable bolt holes.
Role accountabilities
The Operator 3, Longhole Drill will be responsible for the following duties:
- Operate longhole drilling equipment safely and productively within OEM specifications to meet or exceed daily targets.
- Monitor ground conditions and adjust drilling techniques and components to maintain penetration and prevent drifter, shank, rotation, and hole-related issues.
- Un-bog and remove rods, and use the back hammer according to OEM requirements.
- If un-bogging is unsuccessful, mark the hole, consult the supervisor and planning engineer, drill a second hole, and plug or grout the original hole.
- Remove cuttings and sludge to keep drill holes clean and prevent bit blockage and rod bogging.
- Complete required documentation accurately, including:
- Meters drilled
- Re-drills
- Ground conditions
- Delays
- Hole length variations
- Hazards
- Consumables
- Rig and job status
- Protect equipment by operating within RPM limits and following best operating practices.
- Perform operator maintenance as required.
- Work with minimal supervision to achieve between 125 and 200 metres per shift.
Role requirements
Education and qualifications
Applicants should have the following qualifications:
- Completion of Secondary School Education, Advanced Level Education, or a Diploma in Mining or Mechanical Engineering.
- Valid driving license will be an added advantage.
Experience
Applicants should have:
- A minimum of at least 5 years of underground mining experience.
- Experience starting in development or as an underground operator before transitioning to a Solo rig.
Knowledge and skills
Applicants should possess the following knowledge and skills:
- Ability to read and understand daily production shift plans.
- General understanding of underground mining processes and terminologies.
- Experience operating Sandvik DL421 or DL420 series equipment.
- Ability to read geological markings.
- Ability to identify varying rock hardness and manage hole deviation.
- Ability to assess ground conditions and scale loose rock.
- Strict adherence to underground safety protocols.
- First Aid knowledge.
- Good written and oral communication skills in English.
- Excellent hand and eye coordination.
- Ability to maintain high standards of housekeeping.
- Strong work ethics.
- Physical and mental fitness.
- Knowledge of reporting principles.
- Ability to maintain effective cross-shift communication.
- Proper planning and execution skills.
- Ability to coach new employees.
- Good interpersonal skills.
