Background

UBA Tanzania is seeking a qualified and experienced Legal Officer to provide timely, effective, and professional legal services that support the Bank’s operations and strategic objectives. The role is responsible for delivering legal advice, ensuring regulatory compliance, reviewing legal documentation, and safeguarding the Bank’s interests in all legal and commercial matters.

The successful candidate will work closely with business units, management, regulators, and external stakeholders to provide legal guidance on banking operations, credit transactions, contracts, policies, and corporate matters. This position requires strong legal expertise, sound judgment, excellent drafting skills, and a thorough understanding of banking and financial services regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal support and advice during transaction negotiations and business engagements.
  • Advise management and business units on legal issues arising from existing agreements and new legal documentation.
  • Render legal opinions on financial, commercial, and legal matters affecting the Bank’s operations.
  • Prepare and submit periodic legal reports to the Legal Division and management.
  • Attend meetings and provide legal guidance to various departments and stakeholders.
  • Advise on legal matters affecting the Bank, its customers, products, and services.
  • Review and advise on Bank policies to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and financial industry standards.
  • Supervise the safe custody and management of collateral documents for facilities granted by the Bank.
  • Support the development, review, and implementation of corporate policies, procedures, and legal frameworks.
  • Evaluate and provide legal input on tenders, contracts, products, services, and strategic initiatives.
  • Review, draft, negotiate, and manage legal agreements and contractual documentation.
  • Monitor changes in laws and regulations affecting banking operations and advise management accordingly.
  • Ensure compliance with local and international banking regulations and legal requirements.
  • Assist in managing legal risks and mitigating potential liabilities.
  • Coordinate with external legal counsel where necessary.
  • Maintain accurate legal records, files, and documentation.
  • Support dispute resolution, litigation management, and recovery processes when required.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Head of Legal and Company Secretary.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B Hons) from a recognized institution.
  • Registered Advocate and an active member of the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS).
  • Minimum of three (3) years of professional legal experience.
  • At least two (2) years of experience serving as a Legal Officer within the banking sector.
  • Strong knowledge of financial law and credit transaction documentation.
  • Good understanding of banking operations, products, and practices.
  • Knowledge of local and international banking regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Sound understanding of corporate, commercial, and contract law.
  • Excellent legal drafting, negotiation, and document review skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret legislation, regulations, and legal frameworks effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments.
  • Strong teamwork and stakeholder management capabilities.
  • High standards of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Good commercial awareness and understanding of corporate banking operations.

General Conditions

The position is based at UBA Tanzania Head Office in Dar es Salaam.

Employment is offered on a full-time basis.
