Job Purpose

The Senior Finance Officer supports the Head of Finance in the effective management of the Bank’s accounting and financial operations, ensuring accurate financial records, timely financial and regulatory reporting, effective reconciliations, tax compliance, budgeting support and strong financial controls. The role holder will undertake key accounting and reporting activities, support month-end and year-end closing processes, and ensure compliance with Bank of Tanzania regulations, International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), tax laws and the Bank’s internal policies and procedures. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports and schedules in accordance with IFRS and the Bank’s accounting policies.
  • Maintain accurate general ledger records and perform regular general ledger, bank and balance sheet reconciliations, following up outstanding items.
  • Prepare and post month-end, quarter-end and year-end journal entries, including accruals, prepayments, depreciation and amortisation.
  • Assist in the calculation and recording of provisions, impairments and expected credit losses, and ensure balance sheet accounts are reconciled before financial close.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of Bank of Tanzania prudential and regulatory returns within prescribed deadlines, supported by accurate and reconciled records.
  • Monitor changes in relevant regulatory reporting requirements and escalate them to the Head of Finance.
  • Assist in the preparation and filing of statutory tax returns, including VAT, PAYE, SDL, Withholding Tax and Corporate Income Tax, and liaise with the Tanzania Revenue Authority on compliance matters.
  • Support the preparation of the Bank’s annual operating and capital expenditure budgets, monitor actual expenditure against approved budgets, and prepare variance analysis.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial forecasts, cash flow projections and management reports as required by the Head of Finance.
  • Process supplier invoices and payment requests, verify supporting documentation, and maintain accurate supplier records and reconciliations.
  • Prepare and review daily bank and cash reconciliations and assist in monitoring daily cash and liquidity positions.
  • Support internal and external audit assignments by providing accurate schedules, reconciliations and supporting documentation, and assist in addressing audit findings.
  • Ensure compliance with the Bank’s accounting policies, procedures and internal controls, escalating weaknesses identified in accounting processes.
  • Ensure accounting transactions are accurately processed through the Bank’s core banking, ERP and accounting systems, and participate in testing of finance-related system enhancements.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to junior finance staff where required.
  • Keep abreast of developments in IFRS, taxation and Bank of Tanzania regulations, and perform any other finance-related duties assigned by the Head of Finance.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Good knowledge of IFRS and financial reporting requirements, and Tanzanian tax laws and statutory compliance.
  • Sound understanding of accounting principles, internal controls, budgeting and financial analysis in a banking or microfinance environment.
  • Strong reconciliation, analytical and financial reporting skills, with the ability to prepare accurate financial schedules and management reports.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy, with good problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict reporting deadlines in a fast-paced banking environment.
  • Excellent communication and report-writing skills, with the ability to interact effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • High standards of integrity, professionalism, confidentiality and sound judgment.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Commerce or a related field from a recognised institution.
  • CPA(T), registered with NBAA – Mandatory.
  • Minimum of four (4) years’ relevant experience in banking, microfinance or financial services.
  • Practical experience in financial accounting, general ledger management, reconciliations, regulatory reporting, taxation and financial reporting.
  • Experience in Bank of Tanzania regulatory reporting and IFRS financial reporting is highly desirable; experience with core banking and ERP/accounting systems is an added advantage.
