As part of strengthening our operational and HSE functions, we invite applications from suitably qualified, competent, and motivated Tanzanians for the position of Safety and Environmental Officer.
Job Summary
RETOMINING Investment Limited is seeking to recruit a competent, proactive, and results-oriented Safety and Environmental Officer to oversee occupational health and safety, environmental protection, risk management, and regulatory compliance across the company’s mining and aggregate operations.
The successful candidate will be responsible for promoting a strong safety culture, minimizing workplace risks, protecting the environment, and ensuring that mining activities are conducted in accordance with applicable Tanzanian laws, regulations, standards, and company policies.
Key Responsibilities
1. Health & Safety Management
Policy Implementation: Implement and monitor the company’s Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies, procedures, and programs.
Inspections & Audits: Conduct regular workplace safety inspections, safety audits, and risk assessments (including Job Safety Analysis – JSA).
Training & Inductions: Conduct HSE inductions for employees, contractors, and visitors. Organize safety awareness sessions and regular toolbox talks.
Compliance & PPE: Monitor adherence to safe working procedures and compliance with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
2. Environmental & Waste Management
Impact Monitoring: Monitor environmental aspects associated with aggregate mining, including dust control, noise levels, water runoff, land disturbance, and site rehabilitation.
Waste & Pollution Control: Ensure proper segregation, storage, handling, and disposal of waste while promoting pollution prevention and responsible resource usage.
Mitigation Implementation: Oversee and support the execution of environmental management and mitigation plans across operating areas.
3. Incident Investigation & Emergency Preparedness
Incident Analysis: Thoroughly investigate accidents, injuries, near misses, and environmental incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
Emergency Readiness: Coordinate emergency drills, test preparedness procedures, and ensure all emergency response equipment is present and functional.
4. Reporting, Contractor Oversight & Compliance
Record Keeping: Maintain accurate registers for inspections, incidents, hazard logs, waste tracking, and HSE training programs.
Contractor Management: Supervise contractors to ensure full compliance with company HSE standards and regulatory requirements.
Reporting & Stakeholder Engagement: Prepare periodic HSE reports for management and liaise with relevant statutory authorities when required.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
Education: Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Mining Engineering, or a related field.
Professional Certifications: Relevant professional certifications in OHS or Environmental Management will be an added advantage.
Experience: Minimum of 2 to 3 years of relevant working experience, preferably within mining, quarrying, construction, manufacturing, or heavy industrial environments.
Regulatory Knowledge: Sound understanding of Tanzanian mining, occupational health and safety, and environmental legislation.
Technical Skills: Experience in risk assessments, incident investigations, HSE reporting, and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Work Environment: Ability to work effectively in a site/quarry environment under challenging field conditions.
