Geita Gold Mining Limited is looking for a Manager, UG infrastructure & HME to join its Geita division at the Geita mining site.

In this role, the successful candidate will work closely with the Director of Asset Management and Engineering to support the achievement of site targets. The position focuses on developing and implementing industry-leading maintenance strategies and practices for underground mining equipment and infrastructure.

The role is critical in improving underground operations through:

  • Safety performance
  • Operational efficiency
  • Equipment reliability
  • Sustainable underground mining operations

The position also includes responsibility for major maintenance and service operations, both routine and non-routine, on underground mobile equipment.

Key responsibilities

The Manager, UG infrastructure & HME will be responsible for overseeing underground mobile equipment and infrastructure maintenance activities across Geita Gold Mining’s operations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading maintenance and service operations on underground mobile equipment.
  • Supporting the design, installation, and continuous maintenance of underground infrastructure at Star, Comet, and other underground mines as required.
  • Overseeing major equipment rebuilds.
  • Managing welding and tyre bay workshops.
  • Overseeing Light Mechanical Engineering (LME) activities supporting the SC workshop.
  • Collaborating with underground mining teams to ensure equipment and infrastructure availability, reliability, and safety.
  • Supporting sustainable growth and operational success through improved asset management practices.

Key accountabilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Champion safety by identifying and managing workplace hazards related to underground equipment and infrastructure maintenance.
  • Ensure teams are competent, properly trained, and compliant with safety protocols.
  • Provide technical guidance and actionable advice to maintenance leaders and trades personnel.
  • Develop comprehensive scopes of work for major underground mobile equipment projects, including full rebuilds.
  • Ensure maintenance activities align with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) guidelines and operational priorities.
  • Plan and execute underground infrastructure activities in line with the mining plan and short- and long-term service requirements.
  • Implement and enforce best practices for equipment maintenance and infrastructure installation.
  • Analyze equipment failures and identify premature component issues.
  • Institute warranty claims where appropriate.
  • Develop preventive strategies to reduce downtime.
  • Maintain and update training registers for maintenance teams.
  • Monitor skills levels and provide on-the-job training.
  • Review, maintain, and execute a rolling five-year replacement strategy and capital budget for underground equipment and infrastructure.
  • Oversee the timely execution of equipment rebuilds.
  • Ensure forecasts and project plans are achieved to a high standard.
  • Lead equipment selection and procurement processes.
  • Ensure new and replacement equipment meets operational needs and AngloGold Ashanti standards.
  • Coordinate maintenance schedules with mining priorities.
  • Lead root cause analysis investigations for major component failures.
  • Document repair activities to support future maintenance planning.
  • Support efficient work scheduling by balancing routine maintenance and unforeseen repairs.
  • Work with the planning team to optimize inventory management and material availability through Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) arrangements with OEMs.
  • Ensure inspection-related maintenance actions are properly recorded, scheduled, completed, and documented.
  • Participate in an on-call roster to provide expert support during breakdowns and reliability challenges.

Safety and compliance

The role requires strong leadership in safety, risk management, and compliance.

Key safety and compliance duties include:

  • Ensuring electricians involved in high-voltage (HV) and medium-voltage (MV) installations receive appropriate training and certification.
  • Maintaining strict adherence to electrical safety standards.
  • Leading the development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for routine unit activities.
  • Driving hazard identification and mitigation programs.
  • Managing major hazards and critical controls to protect people and assets.
  • Implementing and maintaining a 5S workplace organization program inspired by Six Sigma–Lean principles.
  • Promoting a clean, efficient, and safe working environment.
  • Maintaining awareness and management of compliance frameworks, including:
    • SOX controls
    • Conflict of interest declarations
    • Delegation of authority
    • Timely reporting obligations

Budgeting and cost control

The Manager, UG infrastructure & HME will also be responsible for effective financial planning and cost control.

Key budgeting and cost control responsibilities include:

  • Developing and managing a three-year rolling budget forecast for underground infrastructure and heavy mobile equipment.
  • Ensuring budget plans align with the mine plan and strategic objectives.
  • Working with reliability engineering and asset management teams to implement cost reduction initiatives.
  • Supporting defect elimination, condition monitoring, and reliability improvement programs.
  • Providing contract management oversight.
  • Ensuring contractors meet safety, quality, and cost control requirements.
  • Managing warranty claims, dispute resolution, and quality assurance.
  • Tracking component lifecycles.
  • Ensuring rebuild projects are planned and executed cost-effectively.
  • Maximizing asset availability and protecting asset investments.

Working conditions and physical demands

This position requires a hands-on approach and physical fitness to work directly on heavy underground machinery when necessary.

The work environment may involve exposure to:

  • Loud noise
  • Contaminants
  • Slips, trips, and falls
  • Physical hazards associated with underground mining operations

The successful candidate must demonstrate vigilance, strong attention to detail, and strict adherence to personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
