The key purpose of this role is to lead and manage brewing operations to ensure consistent beer quality, reliable production, and optimal plant performance. The role is responsible for implementing brewing strategies, driving continuous improvement through VPO practices, ensuring adherence to technical and quality standards, and developing high-performing brewing teams while maintaining strong control of safety, operational, and financial performance within the brewery.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
Output and Accountability
- Ensure that Brewery quality and taste targets are met
- Ensure overall reliability of production
- Process optimization and asset management and plant availability
Brewing Strategy and Implementation
- Translate and implement brewing strategies within the framework of the manufacturing and business strategies
- Ensure disciplined execution of standard work practices at the regional brewery level
- Ensure that brand and brewing process standards are met
- Ensure that brewing technical and brand audits are conducted as per the QA audit schedule and deviations identified and managed through the non-conformance management process
Tasting
- Champion ongoing improvements in Brewing using and entrenching VPO tools, routines and practices
- Adherence to the Brewing and IBMS technical and business audit schedule
People Management
- Facilitate team problem solving and decision-making
- Manage people in alignment with ABInBev Leadership practices
- Lead the brewing team in a manner that engenders ownership, empowerment and team interaction
- Lead the development of brewing team goals and ensure these are communicated and understood by team members
- Conduct regular brewing team goal review sessions, and conduct regular one on one and performance reviews
- Ensure training need analyses are conducted and training plans developed for team members
- Ensure appropriate competencies are developed in the team, and ensure cross skilling occurs within the engineering team
- Provide coaching and mentorship to brewing levels 1, 2, 3
- Brewing Managers are responsible for managing technical trainees, providing guidance, supervising development and actively participating in trainee checkouts
Brewing Optimisation
- Ongoing optimisation of brewing quality and production processes
- Analyses plant performance data to identify opportunities for improvement to plant performance and initiates opportunity evaluation
- Analyses plant failure modes and investigate causes for repeat failures to correct root causes
- Ensures that continuous improvement is built into brewing team goals and forms part of regular goal review sessions
- Manage financial performance (prepare and manage budgets) and monthly financial Short Interval Control
Qualifications or Requirements
- BSc Degree in Biological Sciences, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering is required
- Brewing qualification IBD Brewing Diploma is a minimum requirement
- SAB Ltd Brewing Traineeship (or ABInBev certified equivalent) is a further minimum requirement
- At least 8-10 years production experience, of which 5 years’ operating at a management level within Brewing
- Demonstrated experience in driving commercial decisions in a brewery (financial, operational, people)
- Good working knowledge of all VPO, SAP modules and NOSA Safety Standards and requirements
- Ensure that Brewery quality and taste targets are met
