Purpose of role

Provide strategic leadership to the whole brewery (site) to achieve best in class status in all the areas of operations. This includes

  • Safety of the people and the operations
  • Environment
  • Full compliance to:

legal/governmental regulations and requirements

Diageo/EABL/SBL procures, standards and code of business conduct

Quality systems requirements such as ISO, FSCC etc.

To ensure efficient and cost effective production, to deliver finished product in line with sales requirement, adhering to highest quality standards and within budget.

Maintaining excellent quality performance in a safe working environment.

Continuously improving the performance of the operations to reduce losses and costs and improve quality and efficiencies.

The Technical Brewery Operations Manager is part of the regional management team, together with the regional sales manager, the regional First Point (HR) employee and the site finance manager; as the brewery is located away from the SBL headquarters.

The Technical Brewery Operations Manager is responsible for the following departments and fields, and is also required to ensure knowledge transfer in these areas:

  • Production departments of brewing (including raw materials handling, brewing, fermentation, storage and filtration) and packaging.
  • Engineering/maintenance (including utilities of the site)
  • Quality
  • Environment
  • Safety
  • Stores (including spare parts, raw materials, auxiliary materials and packaging materials) – on site and external warehouse.

Accountabilities

  • Fully accountable for managing the site operations teams in the Moshi brewery as well as overseeing general management in the region and site with the regional management team
  • Train team on, and ensure, timely and safe production (brewing, fermentation, storing, filtration and packaging) of all by sales required products, up to the required quality standards.
  • Train team on, and ensuring full compliance to all applicable legal/governmental requirements/regulations as well as Diageo/EABL/SBL standards, procedures and code of business conduct.
  • Ensuring continuous improvement of the operations in terms of service level, operational efficiencies, cost efficiencies and safety. Actively identifying with the team areas of improvement and implementation of these improvement plans.
  • Train Moshi team on, and ensuring implementation of the Excellence in Supply Chain way of working, throughout all facets of the operations.
  • Ensuring full control of all the costs and losses in the operations – while managing minimisation of both.
  • Management of site reliability and efficiency by ensuring proper, timely and efficient planned maintenance of all fixed assets.
  • Ensuring comprehensive inventory control for raw materials, spare parts, raw, auxiliary and packaging materials – which is fully updated in the SAP system.
  • Identification and implementation of new software systems related to the operations on site.
  • Growing the performance of the team by:

Evaluating team members’ performance according to the SBL performance review cycle

Coaching and developing the team

Transferring specialised brewing, technical, packaging and project management knowledge to the team

Identifying training needs and providing training to the team members

Management of CAPEX projects on the site.

Ensuring compliance to all required quality systems standards, such as ISO, HACCP, FSCC – as well as training the team on these standards and ways of working

Accountability for (improving of) the following main KPIs (non-exhaustive list) – including training of the team on these systems and technologies:

  • Safety KPIs on the site
  • Quality KPIs of the site (liquid non-compliance, pack dress, microbiology, flavour scores, IPQI etc)
  • on production efficiencies (OEE brewing and OEE packaging)
  • Extract loss
  • Packaging material losses
  • Energy consumption
  • Water consumption
  • Waste KPIs (waste to landfill, BOD, COD etc.)
  • Cost of Conversion

Qualifications and experience required

Education

Primary & Secondary Schooling (K-12)

Beverages

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science or Engineering
  • Master Brewer certification. Otherwise has to be obtained within 2 years after hiring.

Experience:

  • 10+ years management experience in brewing/packaging industry.
  • 3+ years experience in brewing department – with higher than 1m hl yearly production output.
  • Experience with quality systems, food safety systems and occupational health and safety management in the food & beverage industries
  • Excellent data management (spreadsheet) and query skills a must.
  • Experience and awareness of production/quality/maintenance technologies and best practices in the FMCG industry
  • Fully accountable for managing the site operations teams in the Moshi brewery as well as overseeing general management in the region and site with the regional management team
  • Train team on, and ensure, timely and safe production (brewing, fermentation, storing, filtration and packaging) of all by sales required products, up to the required quality standards.
  • Train team on, and ensuring full compliance to all applicable legal/governmental requirements/regulations as well as Diageo/EABL/SBL standards, procedures and code of business conduct.
