Position Description

The Service Crew Trainer – Expert is responsible for developing, delivering, and evaluating high-quality training programs for service crew personnel working in underground mining operations. This role ensures that all service crew members are competent, safe, and fully aligned with operational standards, regulatory requirements, and best-practice mining procedures. The Trainer plays a key role in fostering a culture of safety, operational discipline, and continuous improvement.

Reporting to: Underground Mine Foreman

Duration: Fixed Term

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct theoretical and practical training sessions for underground service crew, including installation, maintenance, and support tasks.
  • Facilitate hands-on training in underground environments, ensuring trainees perform tasks safely and correctly.
  • Assess trainee competencies using approved assessment tools and document results accurately.
  • Coach employees on safe work practices, equipment usage, hazard recognition, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Identify skill gaps and create targeted learning plans for crew members needing additional support.
  • Develop, update, and maintain training materials including manuals, SOPs, presentations, and assessment forms.
  • Ensure all training documents align with site standards, OEM guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
  • Recommend improvements to existing training programs and operational procedures.
  • Champion a strong safety culture by integrating safety messages into all training activities.
  • Maintain deep knowledge of underground mining regulations, site policies, and industry standards.
  • Ensure all training follows mandatory compliance standards (e.g. OSHA, local mining regulations).
  • Participate in safety audits, incident investigations, and corrective action implementation when collaborate closely with Operations Supervisors, Mine Foremen, and Safety Teams to ensure training supports production targets and workforce capability.
  • Monitor on-the-job performance of service crew members and provide feedback to both trainees and supervisors.
  • Support workforce onboarding and re-training programs for new hires, contractors, or crew transitioning to new roles.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum 7–10 years of underground mining experience, preferably in service crew or similar operations.
  • Demonstrated expertise with underground support systems, ground support installation, services installation (ventilation, water, air), and general underground utilities.
  • Recognized trainer/assessor certification (e.g., Train-the-Trainer, TAE, or equivalent).
  • Strong knowledge of underground safety standards, mine regulations, and risk management principles.
  • Excellent communication, coaching, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred

  • Experience in training program development and competency-based training systems.
  • Supervisory or lead-hand experience in underground service crew roles.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS) and digital training tools.
  • First Aid, Emergency Response Team experience, or Mine Rescue certifications.
