Role Overview:

The Heavy-Duty Mechanic is a key operational role responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient functioning of heavy-duty machinery and fixed plant equipment at the mining site. This position combines hands-on mechanical expertise with general plant support, including maintenance of mobile equipment, crushers, mills, conveyors, pumps, and other processing infrastructure required for day-to-day mining and production operations.

The mechanic will be involved in preventive maintenance programs, troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical and hydraulic issues, supporting repairs, and ensuring operational continuity during all shifts. The candidate is expected to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team (mechanics, welders, electricians, operators) in a demanding mining environment. The role requires communication skills in both Swahili and English and preferably prior experience in a mining company or industrial processing facility, where safety, reliability, and work discipline are paramount.

The Company enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding alcohol, illegal substances, and any unauthorized drugs or paraphernalia on site. All employees must comply with regular safety briefings and random inspections.

The employee is required to stay at the mine site during each rotation. Accommodation is provided at the company camp located in Chunya, Mbeya Region, Tanzania. The position requires adaptability to remote site living, teamwork in a camp environment, and structured shift patterns.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out duties as directed by site supervisors or management, ensuring all tasks are performed safely and in accordance with company procedures.
  • Perform preventive, routine, and corrective maintenance on heavy-duty machinery, mobile equipment, and plant systems to maximize equipment availability.
  • Maintain and repair onsite equipment, processing plant machinery, and light&heavy vehicles—from simple tasks to complex mechanical repairs.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical faults and perform necessary repairs, including major component replacements or rebuilds (subject to management confirmation).
  • Use diagnostic tools and computer programs (e.g., ET) to identify faults, clear trouble codes, and determine required parts.
  • Conduct inspections, lubrication, oil changes, adjustments, and general servicing as part of the preventive maintenance program, upon confirmation by management.
  • Perform detailed failure analysis and provide recommendations for corrective actions or component improvements.
  • Support daily plant operations, including equipment inspections, start-up, shutdown, monitoring, and assistance with mechanical adjustments.
  • Work on transmissions, engines, hydraulic systems, braking systems, and drivetrains of heavy-duty equipment.
  • Test repaired equipment for proper performance, ensuring operational safety and compliance with performance standards.
  • Assist with the installation, calibration, alignment, and commissioning of new mechanical equipment and components.
  • Respond promptly to breakdowns, conduct troubleshooting, and execute repair work to minimize production downtime.
  • Maintain accurate written reports, maintenance logs, schedules, and equipment performance records.
  • Maintain proper organization of workshop tools, spare parts, and mechanical consumables; ensure the working area remains safe, clean, and compliant with HSSE policies.
  • Work collaboratively with Mine Operations, Mill Operations, welders, electricians, and other technical teams to ensure seamless coordination and efficient site performance.
  • Report all unsafe conditions, near misses, hazards, equipment malfunctions, and completed maintenance tasks to the supervisor.
  • Strictly comply with all HSSE rules, PPE requirements, safety standards, and the company’s zero-tolerance policy regarding alcohol or unauthorized substances.
  • Perform additional operational or maintenance duties as assigned, including shift work, overtime, and emergency tasks.
  • Communicate effectively in both Swahili and English regarding task updates, equipment condition, repairs, and operational requirements.

Key Requirements:

  • Over 10 years of experience in mechanics heavy-duty servicing
  • Experience in Mining Sector recommended
  • Work responsibly and within a team is expected
  • Good Level of English and Swahili required
