Role Purpose
The Value Chain and Climate-Smart Agriculture Specialist will lead the identification of viable, sustainable and climate-resilient business opportunities across the eight target districts. The post-holder translates environmental constraints into commercial opportunities, embedding climate-smart practices such as solar drying, sustainable fishing and seaweed value addition into the enterprise models supported through the assignment.
Accountabilities
- Lead the local market and value chain assessments within each district, identifying viable business opportunities, constraints and market linkages for women-led enterprises.
- Embed climate-resilient investment and operating models tailored to specific sectors, including renewable energy integration, waste reduction and circular economy, and climate adaptation.
- Identify value-added product opportunities across coastal and agricultural value chains relevant to the Zanzibar context.
- Contribute climate-smart business content to the dual-track training curriculum and ToT materials.
- Advise the team on turning environmental and ecological constraints into sustainable business opportunities.
- Support mentorship and supervision activities with technical guidance on climate-resilient enterprise practices.
- Support CMGs, VSLAs in adopting Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) practices to increase productivity, strengthen resilience and reduce emissions among target communities including drip irrigation and rainwater harvesting, drought tolerant seed varieties etc
- Support CMGs, VSLAs to identify potential Income Generating activities based on the agro ecological zones
Technical Expertise, skills & Knowldge
Essential
- Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, Agricultural Economics, Environmental Science, or Agribusiness.
- Minimum of five (5) years’ experience identifying market linkages and implementing climate-resilient business practices (for example solar drying, sustainable fishing or seaweed value addition).
- Knowledge on Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) practices to increase productivity, strengthen resilience and reduce emissions among target communities including drip irrigation and rain water harvesting, drought tolerant seed varieties etc
- Proven experience with at least two (2) comparable consultancies since 2019 focused on developing value-added products and implementing environmental sustainability measures within community-based economic programmes.
- Demonstrated ability to turn environmental constraints into business opportunities.
- Experience working in Zanzibar
- Experience in the World Bank or other international organization
Desirable
- Experience with Blue Economy and coastal value chains in Zanzibar or mainland coastal Tanzania.
- Working proficiency in Kiswahili.
- Strong English writing and presentation skills
- Familiarity with green economy financing mechanisms.
- Familiarity with the Blue economy and community based empowerment models
