Purpose

Manage the Customs and Excise activities in Diageo’s footprint in East Africa, covering Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya.

Execute Customs and Excise strategies and policies in East Africa.

Accountabilities

  • Provide specialist support with customs issues in East Africa – for example, product classification disputes (both customs and excise), Customs Valuation and Inter-Company Selling Price (ICSP) reviews.
  • Manage Customs and Excise related queries from the customs and excise authorities relating to imported products and raw materials used by East Africa.
  • Manage Customs and Excise aspects of international trade projects to deliver shareholder value and manage potentials exposure to the business in East Africa.
  • Provide technical support with respect to addressing inefficiencies and driving process improvement within the Customs and Excise arena.
  • Recommend and implement changes to optimize processes, systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Keep up to date with customs and excise regulatory changes and best practice; identify risks and opportunities and recommend actions.

Key interactions – Internal

Global Tax partners and business unit leaders – develop and maintain a strong working relationship and stay informed about business priorities and developments

Global functions –Supply, Legal and Corporate Relations. Collaborating with these functions to deliver end to end Supply chain efficiency

Key interactions – External

  • Customs & Excise authorities – proactive management of the relationship with customs and excise.
  • Regulatory authorities overseeing licenses and permits.
  • Providing specialist input to local site excise audits and resultant enquiries
  • Providing documentation as requested
  • International and Regional Trade bodies

Critical Capabilities

  • Advanced customs & excise knowledge
  • International trade experience
  • Project management and stakeholder communications
  • Compliance and ethics mindset

Experience / skills required:

  • Experience within a Global Trade or Tax advisory function in a consulting firm or multinational beverage/tobacco manufacturer.
  • Data analytics skills (Power Query/BI etc.), ideally with systems experience in SAP or equivalent
  • Effective project management and implementation skills
  • Team player with experience working across diverse cultures
