Job Purpose
The Credit Analyst – Mining Sector Financing will be responsible for ensuring timely and quality assessment of proposals for credit facilities, whether new or existing, based on sound credit and financial principles.
Main Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering a professional service to business units by assessing and evaluating credit facility requests, including those related to the mining sector. The role will focus on ensuring that all credit proposals are reviewed in line with sound credit principles, credit policy, and financial principles, with the aim of minimizing risk to the bank.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assess and evaluate requests for credit facilities, including new and existing facilities, especially within the mining sector.
- Provide specialist and professional credit assessment to determine whether credit proposals meet the required criteria.
- Ensure counter-party credit risk falls within acceptable parameters.
- Independently recommend appropriate credit proposals, including necessary terms and conditions to protect the bank’s exposure.
- Review and evaluate information to gain a thorough understanding of mining business parameters, profit drivers, value creation factors, and associated risks.
- Defend professional judgment in a manner that does not negatively affect business relationships.
- Utilize available industry and market information to identify and understand contextual threats affecting existing and potential clients.
- Build and maintain smooth working relationships with business counterparts to improve the quality of business proposals and turnaround time.
- Share joint credit responsibility for recommended business.
- Take or recommend appropriate remedial actions for deteriorating exposures identified during the review process.
- Observe service level agreements while ensuring the quality of credit proposals is not compromised.
Knowledge and Skills
The ideal candidate should have the following knowledge and skills:
- Excellent understanding of credit and associated risks, especially in the mining sector.
- Good interpersonal skills proven in a business or credit environment.
- Knowledge of bank credit products.
- Detailed knowledge of credit analysis techniques.
- Strong analytical and numerical skills.
- Good communication and presentation skills.
- Strong negotiation skills.
- Ability to appropriately structure a deal.
- Understanding of industry sectors, particularly the mining sector and related sectors, including relevant regulations.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or related fields.
- Prior banking experience in lending will be an added advantage.
- At least 3 years of experience in a credit role within the banking sector.
- Assess and evaluate requests for credit facilities, including new and existing facilities, especially within the mining sector.
- Provide specialist and professional credit assessment to determine whether credit proposals meet the required criteria.
- Ensure counter-party credit risk falls within acceptable parameters.
