WWF International expanded its global Youth Engagement Programme for 18-30 year olds in 2024. The Programme, which provides internships, youth-led grassroots leadership programme and virtual mentorship opportunities, aims to inspire a new generation of environmental advocates and leaders, especially young women, in their countries and communities to actively contribute to youth and community-led conservation and help drive positive change*.

MISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT

Over the past three decades, Tanzania has witnessed a substantial impact of climate change, which has profoundly impacted the well-being of its population and biodiversity. To address this challenge, WWF TCO has been actively implementing various interventions that prioritize both community and biodiversity resilience in partnership with both public and private sectors in priority conservation landscapes. The Great Ruaha River Catchment is one of the priority conservation sub-landscapes within the Water Tower landscape.

WWF Tanzania Her Resilience, in partnership with CARE International and local organizations (AGCOT, TGNP, Shahidi wa Maji, and the Conservation Farming Unit) is implementing a six-year project (September 2024–March 2030): Her Resilient Our Planet (HROP) funded Global Affairs Canada (GAC), in the SAGCOT region covering six districtsIringa, Kilolo, Mufindi, Wanging’ombe and Mbarali. The project addresses interconnected environmental, social, and economic challenges in Tanzania's Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor (SAGCOT) by promoting gender-responsive, climate-smart agriculture and biodiversity-friendly food systems. Aligned with WWF's 2030 Roadmap, Tanzania's conservation strategy, and CARE's mission, HROP aims to strengthen climate resilience, improve food security and livelihoods, and empower marginalized women and youth through enhanced leadership and participation in climate and natural resource governance.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS

Under the supervision of the Project Executant, the project intern will support implementation of project activities by collaborating with other WWF project staff and HROP implementing partners. Under the supervision of the Project Executant, the Project intern will also work closely with local governments (LGAs) in Iringa, Kilolo, Mufindi, Wanging’ombe, and Mbarali Districts to facilitate implementation of project activities. Facilitate environmental management education and livelihood-development interventions. Additionally, the Project Intern will support the delivery of an effective implementation of the Natural Resource Management (NRM) strategy of the project to ensure that agricultural growth at all levels is built on a foundation of integrated water resources and land management, and sustainable Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM)

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The intern will support the project team in implementing sustainable landscape management activities on the ground. This is an opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience in integrated water and land resource management, as well as Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) approaches. Day-to-day tasks will include :

• Helping to organize community activities such as tree-planting events, establishing and maintaining tree nurseries, and supporting watershed management efforts.
• The intern will also help deliver training to community members on agroforestry systems and nature-positive land and water management practices.
• In addition, the intern will assist the Project Executant in promoting alternative, naturepositive livelihood initiatives such as beekeeping and aquaculture. Further responsibilities include supporting village land use planning activities, helping facilitate the development of community restoration and conservation action plans, and assisting in the formation and training of school environmental clubs.
• Undertake any other assignment as may be required by the Line Manager.

PROFILE

Required Qualifications.

• Experience in community engagement, farmers mobilization and working with rural communities
• Some good experience working in Natural resources management, Climate smart Agriculture, Integrated water management and Environmental conservation programs
• Proven skills on agroecology and agroforestry practices and systems
• Able and willing to travel extensively in remote programme villages across 5 districts in three regions of project implementation (>50%) accompanied by WWF staff.
• Organizational experience, including a proven ability to work on a variety of tasks simultaneously, and to perform well under pressure.
• Excellent interpersonal, good team spirit, and networking skills, especially within team members and multi-stakeholder contexts.
• Accuracy, Attention to details, ability to follow and meet deadlines.
• Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and as part of a team.

• Under the guidance of the Project Executant, the intern will be working with Partners i.e., HROP Implementing Partners (CARE, TGNP, SwM, ACGOT, CFU), Tanzania Forest Services (TFS), TAWA, TANAPA, Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism; District Councils (LGAs), local communities in the respective landscapes and other NGOs based in and working in related interventions.
