Job Summary:

This dual-role Technician provides essential technical support for surgical procedures in the General Theatre and specialized laboratory support within the In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) unit. The role involves maintaining equipment, ensuring sterility for oocyte retrieval/embryo transfer, and handling biological specimens with extreme precision.

Key Responsibilities:

Theatre Support: Set up and calibrate surgical equipment (e.g., surgical diathermy, suction units, laparoscopic towers). Assist with patient positioning and preparation. Ensure the OR is stocked with disposable items and sterile trays.

Equipment Maintenance: Perform daily checks, cleaning, and minor maintenance on theatre equipment; report major faults to Biomedical Engineering.

IVF Support: Prepare the IVF lab environment (temperature control, air quality monitoring). Handle and prepare culture media and reagents for embryo culture.

Specimen Management: Collect and process specimens (e.g., oocytes, semen) in the sterile lab environment. Assist the Embryologist with microscopic examination and preparation for ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection).

Documentation: Maintain stringent logs for equipment usage, temperature charts, and specimen tracking.

Compliance: Adhere strictly to Human Tissue Authority (HTA) or equivalent regulations regarding traceability and chain of custody.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Education: Diploma/Certificate in Biomedical Engineering, Medical Technology, or a Health Science.

Experience: Experience in an Operating Theatre or Embryology laboratory is highly preferred.

Skills: Fine motor skills for handling delicate equipment, meticulous attention to detail, knowledge of aseptic technique, and good record-keeping abilities.
