The Barrick Africa Middle East Team at North Mara Mine is seeking to recruit an experienced Senior Tradesman – Auto Electrician on a 2-year fixed-term contract.

This is a 2-year fixed-term contract role, 8 weeks on / 4 weeks off rotation. North Mara is undergoing a significant HME OC Maintenance turnaround. The primary mandate of this role is structured skills transfer and capability development of the national auto electrical workforce — this is the key performance indicator of the engagement. The successful candidate will combine hands-on technical execution across the North Mara HME fleet (CAT 777E/785C haul trucks, CAT 6020B/395 excavators, and Sandvik drill rigs) with a genuine commitment to mentoring, coaching, and building a fully self-sufficient local team by the end of the contract term.

Responsibilities

  • Comply with all Barrick health, safety, and environmental policies, procedures, and the Mines Health & Safety Act; visibly lead by example on Zero Harm.
  • Deliver a structured, formal auto electrical training programme to develop national AE technicians to a competent, independent standard — this is the primary KPI of the role.
  • Lead, supervise, mentor, and coach the national auto electrical team on all tasks, ensuring skills are progressively transferred throughout the contract term.
  • Provide advanced technical expertise in the diagnosis, troubleshooting, and repair of complex auto electrical systems on CAT 777E/785C haul trucks, CAT 6020B/395 excavators, and Sandvik surface drill rigs.
  • Utilise CAT Electronic Technician (Cat ET), VIMS, Sandvik control system diagnostic tools, and other appropriate diagnostic equipment for accurate fault finding.
  • Lead or participate in root cause failure analysis (RCFA) related to electrical failures and implement sustainable corrective actions to eliminate repeat faults.
  • Drive improvements in key performance indicators including MTTR, MTBF, equipment availability, and electrical maintenance backlog.
  • Ensure effective planning and execution of preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on all electrical systems; support the Planning team to improve schedule compliance.
  • Ensure proper application of LOTOTO, Permit to Work (PTW), arc flash procedures, and mandatory PPE on all electrical work.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections in SAP; drive SAP compliance within the AE team.
  • Manage and coordinate OEM liaison, warranty claims, and specialist vendor support for electrical systems across the fleet.
  • Support the implementation of reliability improvements and best practices within the auto electrical section.
  • Perform any additional duties as required by your supervisor.

Qualification requirements

  • Relevant Auto Electrical Trade Certificate — required.
  • CAT Electronic Technician (Cat ET) certification — required.
  • Sandvik auto electrical and automation systems certification — required.
  • Air conditioning systems repair certification.
  • Computer literacy: SAP, Microsoft Office Suite — required.
  • Valid driver's licence.

Experience and competencies needed.

  • Minimum 7–10 years’ experience as an Auto Electrician on heavy mobile equipment in a mining or heavy industrial environment.
  • Specific hands-on experience with CAT 777E/785C haul truck and CAT 6020B/395 excavator auto electrical systems — required.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience with Sandvik surface drill rig auto electrical and automation/control systems — required.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering structured skills transfer and training to national teams in a cross-cultural mining environment — required.
  • At least 3–5 years’ supervisory or leading hand experience within an auto electrical maintenance team.
  • Good working knowledge of SAP PM and CMMS work order management.
  • Experience with CAT VIMS data interpretation and condition-based monitoring for AE fault prediction.
  • Experience in root cause analysis and implementing sustainable corrective actions.
  • Medical fitness for the mining environment.
