As part of this effort, SNV is recruiting a Senior Intern a junior-level position to support the implementation of field activities under the SUSTAIN Eco project. The intern will contribute to the protection and conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services, with a focus on environmental restoration, sustainable land use, and water resource management within the landscape.

Job Description

  • Support land use planning processes, including supervision of land parcel demarcation and issuance of Certificates of Customary Right of Occupancy (CCROs) in collaboration with Local Government Authorities (LGAs).
  • In collaboration of LGAs assist in the preparation of Joint Forest Resource Management Plans (JFRMPs) and Community-Based Forest Management (CBFM) plans and facilitate the gazettement of village forests.
  • Strengthen the capacity of Village Land Use Management Committees (VLUMs), Village Natural Resource Committees (VNRCs), and Water User Associations (WUAs) to carry out their mandates effectively.
  • Provide support to beekeeping groups to enhance their capacity and integration into the honey value chain.
  • Strengthen and support women and youth champions to actively engage in natural resource management and local governance processes and facilitate their capacity to lead and conduct community dialogues within their respective villages.
  • Produce satellite maps and GIS data products to illustrate land use, forest cover changes, and protected riparian zones.
  • Contribute to the promotion of climate-smart agriculture, reforestation, carbon sequestration, and forest regeneration approaches.
  • Engage with and support coordination among key stakeholders including Lake Rukwa Basin Water Board, district and regional authorities, TANAPA, NGOs, Natural resources champions and beekeepers’ groups.
  • Monitor and evaluate project performance and progress against the approved project work plan as it relates to land use and natural resources management and suggest corrective measures where appropriate.
  • Support environmental education and promotion activities, including enforcement and restoration of 60-meter protected buffer zones (riparian, watershed, and wetland areas).
  • Assist in drafting project progress reports in accordance with SNV and donor guidelines.
  • Comply and adhere to all SNV procedures and policies, including Travel, Procurement, Finance and HR issues.
  • Any other relevant duties as shall be determined by the PM or Management team

Qualifications

  • Degree’s level degree in ecology/forest conservation, natural resources, environmental science, land use planning or related field
  • A minimum of 3 years for the bachelor’s degree holder, work experience with development programmes focusing on natural resource management, conservation, Land Use, CBFM or environmental management in Tanzania
  • Expertise in applying land use and natural resources monitoring tools and related concepts
  • Hands-on experience in facilitating multi-stakeholder platforms, dialogues.
  • Experience working in international organizations, and the ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural setting.
  • Willingness to travel long distances in remote rural areas.
  • Experience of designing/ implementing carbon credit schemes a definite advantage
  • Knowledge of sustainable fishing approaches desirable
  • Knowledge and application of climate resilience and Gender Equity and Social Inclusion (GESI) approaches an advantage
