Role Description

A referral program is a marketing strategy where existing customers are incentivized to recommend a product or service to their friends and family, often with a reward for both the referrer and the referred individual. These programs are designed to leverage the power of word-of-mouth marketing to acquire new customers. A Referral Program Manager, specifically for a “Refer a Friend” program, is responsible for developing, implementing, and optimizing a program that incentivizes existing customers or employees to refer new customers or employees. This role involves strategic planning, campaign management, performance analysis, and collaboration with various teams to ensure the program’s success. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define program objectives, target audiences, referral incentives (for both referrers and referred individuals), and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Develop and execute promotional campaigns across various channels (email, social media, in-app notifications, etc.) to drive awareness and participation in the referral program.
  • Track program performance, identify trends, analyze data, and make data-driven recommendations for optimization.
  • Conduct A/B tests on different program elements (incentives, messaging, creative) to improve engagement and conversion rates.
  • Work closely with product, engineering, marketing, and customer support teams to ensure seamless integration of the referral program and a positive experience for all participants.
  • Manage the fulfillment of referral rewards and ensure timely and accurate processing of referrals.
  • Ensure the referral program adheres to legal and regulatory requirements. 

Qualifications

  • Experience in Program Development and Project Management
  • Experience in fintech / telecom / mobile distribution
  • Understanding of mobile payments (Airtel Money, M-Pesa, etc.)
  • Experience managing field agents, points of sale, or POS
  • Experience in launching loyalty programs, attracting or activating users
  • Experience in developing referral schemes, MLM structures or agent programs
  • Marketing skills, including experience in creating marketing materials and content
  • Strong Communication and Relationship Management skills
  • Analytical skills to track and analyze program performance
  • Familiarity with CRM software and referral program best practices
  • Proven experience in a similar role is beneficial
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, Business Administration, or related field.
