Position overview

Turkys Mifuko manufactures non-woven bags at its facility in Zanzibar. The factory operates an extrusion line and multiple bag-making machines producing Rolls, D-Cut, W-Cut, laundry, and amenity bags. We are seeking an experienced Production/Factory Manager to own production end-to-end; from raw material input to finished goods output and to lead the factory through an active operational turnaround. This is a hands-on leadership role for a manufacturing professional who can drive output, control waste, enforce quality standards, and develop a production team.

Key responsibilities

Production management

  • Own and manage all production sections: Fabric Production (Extrusion & Slitting), Bag Conversion, Paper Bags, and Printing.
  • Plan and schedule daily, weekly, and monthly production against customer orders and stock targets.
  • Ensure production targets are met on time, within specification, and at planned material consumption rates.
  • Monitor machine utilisation and drive improvements in output efficiency and uptime.
  • Coordinate raw material requirements with the Inventory team to prevent production stoppages.

Quality & waste control

  • Enforce quality standards across all production stages – extrusion yield, GSM accuracy, bag dimensions, seal integrity.
  • Monitor and reduce waste across all sections; own the waste analysis process.
  • Investigate quality failures and implement corrective actions.

Production data & reporting

  • Ensure accurate and timely data entry for all production records – roll production, bag production, extrusion logs, and daily summaries.
  • Analyse production data to identify yield gaps, machine performance issues, and operator productivity.
  • Report daily and weekly production performance to the General Manager.
  • Own the production KPI dashboard and drive improvement against targets.

Process & efficiency improvement

  • Identify and implement improvements in production planning, shifts and manning levels.
  • Drive optimisation and roll utilisation across product types.
  • Lead the implementation of SOPs and work instructions across all production sections.

Team leadership & development

  • Lead, supervise, and develop all production section heads and operators.
  • Enforce the set KPIs for each section and conduct regular performance reviews.
  • Build a culture of accountability, output discipline, and continuous improvement on the factory floor.
  • Identify training needs and coordinate skills development for operators and technicians.
  • Coordinate with the Maintenance team to ensure planned preventive maintenance is executed and machine availability is maximised.

Qualifications & experience

  • Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment, of which at least 3 years in a factory management or production leadership role.
  • Experience in plastics, packaging, or non-woven manufacturing is a strong advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multi-section production operations and drive yield improvement.
  • Experience with production planning, scheduling, and capacity management.
  • Strong proficiency in MS Excel for production data analysis and reporting.
  • Familiarity with ISO documentation, SOPs, and quality management systems.
  • Experience leading and developing factory-floor teams of 40+ people.

Key competencies

  • Technical depth – understands manufacturing processes and can diagnose production problems at the machine level.
  • Output-driven – sets clear targets and holds the team accountable to them.
  • Analytical – reads production data fluently and acts on what it tells him.
  • Hands-on – present on the factory floor, not managing from behind a desk.
  • Process-minded – builds systems and SOPs that outlast individual operators.
  • People leadership – develops section heads and operators, not just manages them.
  • Communication – reports clearly and concisely to senior management.

Key performance indicators

  • Extrusion yield (target: ≥98%).
  • Bag-making yield (target: ≥95%).
  • Overall material E2E yield (target: ≥93%).
  • Production output vs. plan (target: ≥95% on-time fulfilment).
  • Waste as a percentage of total material consumed (target: reduction month-on-month).
  • Machine utilisation and downtime tracking.
  • Accuracy and timeliness of production reporting.
  • Operator performance scores against individual KPIs.
