The position
Maternity Africa is looking to appoint a Medical Doctor with a Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing and managing the medical team to ensure adherence to government health standards and requirements in hospital records and daily operational procedures.

Key responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following duties:
- Oversee medical activities in clinical areas, including:
- Antenatal care
- Postnatal ward
- Labour ward
- Theatres
- Newborn nursery
- Fistula ward
- Early pregnancy ward
- Outpatient clinic
- Laboratory, as appropriate
- Lead the team of local doctors to ensure excellent clinical care is maintained and developed.
- Provide medical opinions and assist in the management of any outpatients or inpatients referred for review by the midwifery team.
- Ensure that teaching ward rounds take place every morning and that appropriate care plans are decided and implemented according to current clinical guidelines.
- Attend all obstetric emergencies while on duty or on call and plan ongoing management of care.
- Perform assisted deliveries, caesarean sections, and other procedures in theatre.
- Assist the midwifery team in the prevention and management of complications of pregnancy and labour.
- Attend and review all patients with early pregnancy complications and take responsibility for planning and implementing medical or surgical management.
- Assist during fistula camps, including:
- Screening of patients
- Intraoperative care
- Post-operative care
- Be present on-site during working hours within the clinical area.
- Perform on-call duties, including weekends and nights, according to the Kivulini Maternity Centre roster.
- Mentor and support all members of the multidisciplinary team in a way that emphasizes shared goals, shared knowledge, and mutual respect.
- Actively participate in the training schedule for clinical staff and ensure training sessions form an integral part of staff development.
- Ensure all medical documentation is completed correctly and on time.
- Lead clinical governance initiatives, including timely reporting and review of clinical incidents.
- Ensure that data collection is timely, accurate, and complete as required for service delivery and for any ongoing Maternity Africa-approved research projects.
- Ensure timely, accurate, and complete reporting of reproductive health data and reports to the Ministry of Health, as required.
- Be responsible for rostering medical, laboratory, and nurse anaesthetist staff.
- Perform any other duties related to the role as required by Maternity Africa.
Qualifications and specifications
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Degree in Medicine with a Master’s in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from an accredited institution.
- Current registration with the Tanganyika Medical Council (TMC).
- At least five years of professional experience as a Medical Doctor.
- Positive attitude.
- Ability to practice safely.
- Effective communication skills.
- Candidates with fistula surgery training are preferred and encouraged to apply.
