Compassionate Carbon Tanzania Ltd is a mission-driven organization launched by Compassionate Carbon LLC and Eden: People+Planet (Eden). Specializing in developing and implementing landscape-scale forest carbon projects through Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) and Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+), we collaborate with local communities to restore landscapes, create jobs, protect ecosystems, and mitigate climate change. Our projects integrate nature-based solutions to help meet global emissions targets while ensuring community ownership and long-term sustainability. The Rubeho Mountains Carbon Project, a significant initiative in Tanzania, focuses on native forest restoration and community-based conservation efforts.

The Monitoring, Evaluation + Learning (MEL) Coordinator connects field implementation with the information needed to understand progress, learn, and improve. Working across Compassionate Carbon Tanzania’s Forest Protection, Livelihoods, Forst Restoration and Community/Stakeholder Engagement workstreams, the Coordinator strengthens practical monitoring systems, builds the capacity of field teams and community-based data collectors, and ensures that monitoring information is collected consistently and maintained to appropriate quality standards. The role works closely with the MEL + Data Quality Manager and Program Managers to identify trends and gaps, inform program decisions, strengthen implementation, and contribute to reliable reporting and carbon-standard verification.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITES

  • Data Collection Tools + Systems: Develop, adapt, and maintain practical monitoring tools, forms, guidelines, and SOPs across Forest Protection, Livelihoods, Forest Restoration, and Community/Stakeholder Engagement functions. Maintain organized, secure, traceable, and audit-ready monitoring records and support effective use of EarthRanger and other data collection systems.
  • Program Data Coordination: Coordinate monthly and quarterly data collection with Program Managers, field teams, and community-based data collectors. Ensure monitoring data across programs, including surveys and field monitoring activities, are collected completely, consistently, on time, and in alignment with standards.
  • Data Quality Assurance: Conduct routine QA/QC, including completeness and validation checks, spot checks, and field verification to ensure that data meets Equitable Earth standards. Identify and resolve data gaps or inconsistencies with Program Managers and data collectors and ensure established data standards and procedures are consistently followed.
  • Data Analysis + Reporting: Clean, compile, summarize, and conduct routine analysis of monitoring data to identify progress, trends, gaps, and data-quality concerns. Prepare clear monitoring summaries and contribute verified data and documentation to project reporting, learning reviews, and carbon-standard verification.
  • Training + Capacity Building: Develop practical training materials appropriate to field and community contexts. Train and coach field staff, enumerators, community-based data collectors, and other relevant stakeholders on monitoring procedures, tools, data-quality expectations, and ethical data collection. Revise training materials as needed to address training gaps or quality issues.
  • Collaboration + Stakeholder Coordination: Work closely with the MRV + Data Quality Manager, Program Managers, field teams, communities, and relevant government stakeholders to integrate monitoring into field activities, coordinate data collection, address monitoring gaps, and communicate relevant findings.

EDUCATION + WORK EXPERIENCE

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, or a related field
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience in monitoring and evaluation, field data collection, or data management.
  • Prior experience working in natural resources, conservation, forestry, agriculture, or other rural development projects is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with field-based monitoring and data collection, including coordinating or supervising enumerators, data clerks, community-based data collectors, or field teams.
  • Experience training and supporting community members and field teams in data collection methods, tools, and data-quality requirements.
  • Hands-on experience developing and using digital data collection tools, such as KoBoToolbox, ODK, Survey123, or similar platforms.

  • Additional professional training or certification in Monitoring + Evaluation is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with EarthRanger, SMART, GIS tools such as QGIS, forest carbon projects, or carbon standards such as Equitable Earth or Verra is an advantage but not required.

SKILLS + ABILITIES

  • Monitoring + Evaluation: Good understanding of monitoring and evaluation concepts, including indicators, baselines, data quality, results tracking, data collection methodologies, and learning from monitoring information.
  • Data Management + Analysis: Strong analytical and data-management skills, including the ability to clean, organize, summarize, interpret, and present monitoring data and identify trends, gaps, and data-quality issues.
  • Data Collection Systems: Ability to develop practical, user-friendly data collection tools and explain their use clearly to people with different levels of technical experience or formal education.
  • Quality Assurance: Strong attention to detail and ability to apply defined QA/QC procedures consistently, identify errors and inconsistencies, and work constructively with teams to resolve data-quality issues.
  • Training + Facilitation: Strong training and facilitation skills, with patience, humility, and respect when working with rural communities and community-based data collectors.
