A Midwifery Nurse, also known as a Nurse Midwife, plays a vital role in providing comprehensive care to women throughout their reproductive lifespan, including during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.

Responsibilities or duties

Key Responsibilities:

1. Prenatal Care:

  • Conduct routine antenatal checks and monitor the health of both mother and baby.
  • Provide counselling and advice on prenatal care, nutrition, and lifestyle.
  • Perform screening tests and interpret results to identify any risks or complications.

2. Labor and Delivery:

  • Assist women during labor and childbirth, providing support and pain management techniques.
  • Monitor the progress of labor and the condition of the mother and baby.
  • Conduct deliveries and manage any complications that arose during childbirth.

3. Postpartum Care:

  • Provide care and support to mothers and newborns during the postpartum period.
  • Monitor the health and recovery of the mother and the well-being of the newborn.
  • Offer guidance on breastfeeding, newborn care, and postpartum recovery.

4. Family Planning and Reproductive Health:

  • Provide information and counselling on family planning and contraceptive options.
  • Conduct gynecological exams and offer reproductive health services.
  • Educate patients on sexual health and preventive care.

5. Patient Education and Counselling:

  • Educate and counsel patients on various aspects of reproductive health, childbirth, and newborn care.
  • Provide emotional support and guidance to women and their families during pregnancy and childbirth.

6. Collaboration with Healthcare Providers:

  • Collaborate with obstetricians, pediatricians, and other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive care for patients.
  • Refer patients to specialists when necessary and coordinate care plans.

7. Record Keeping and Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of patient histories, procedures, and interactions.
  • Document all care provided and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

8. Advocacy and Holistic Care:

  • Advocate for patient-centered, holistic care that addresses the physical, emotional, and social needs of women and their families.
  • Promote practices that reduce maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Education: Diploma/bachelor’s degree in nursing and certification as a Nurse Midwife.
  • Skills: Strong clinical skills, excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, empathy, and attention to detail.

Experience needed

  • Experience: Relevant experience in midwifery and women’s health.

Working Conditions:

  • Environment: Work in a hospital
  • Hours: May include shifts, weekends, and on-call duties.
