MECHANICAL TECHNICIAN (Dar es Salaam)

Job Description – Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance of mechanical machinery and equipment.
  • Inspect machines and identify mechanical faults, defects, and potential failures.
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical equipment to minimize production downtime.
  • Carry out maintenance, repair, and replacement of bearings, gearboxes, shafts, belts, chains, pumps, valves, rollers, and other mechanical components.
  • Assist in the installation, alignment, commissioning, and modification of machinery and equipment.
  • Conduct routine inspections and ensure equipment is operating within required standards.
  • Respond promptly to machine breakdowns and carry out effective repairs.
  • Perform equipment lubrication and ensure proper lubrication schedules are maintained.
  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings, equipment manuals, and technical specifications.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, breakdowns, spare parts, and equipment conditions.
  • Work closely with Production and other Engineering teams to resolve equipment-related problems.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities comply with health, safety, environmental, and company procedures.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce equipment failures, maintenance costs, and energy consumption.
  • Support the maintenance team during machine installation, shutdowns, overhauls, and major maintenance activities.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Engineering Manager.

Job Requirements

  • Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • Relevant experience in mechanical maintenance, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Good knowledge of mechanical maintenance, machinery troubleshooting, and repair techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and technical manuals.
  • Knowledge of rotating equipment, conveyors, gearboxes, pumps, bearings, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Basic knowledge of welding, fitting, fabrication, and machining would be an added advantage.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and respond to equipment breakdowns.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Commitment to occupational health, safety, and environmental requirements.
  • Ability to work shifts, weekends, or during planned maintenance shutdowns when required.
  • Experience in a steel, roofing, metal-processing, or similar manufacturing environment will be an added advantage.
