AIRD Tanzania Program is seeking for qualified National personnel for the position below:

Responsibilities or duties

The Mechanic is responsible for carrying out preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and minor to major repairs of vehicles and machinery in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications and organizational standards. Reporting to the Senior Workshop Foreman, the role ensures fleet reliability, safety, and operational readiness while strictly adhering to Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) standards, environmental protection requirements, and AIRD policies.

The position contributes to minimizing vehicle downtime, extending asset lifespan, and ensuring safe and cost-effective fleet operations in a humanitarian setting. This position is Workshop-based with occasional field response to vehicle breakdowns and may require extended working hours, weekends, or emergency response depending on operational needs.

Qualifications or requirements 

Certificate or Diploma in Auto-Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.

Experience needed

• Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the repair and maintenance of vehicles, generators and machinery.
• Having experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy-duty trucks, buses, generators and heavy-duty machinery.
• Preference will be given to candidates with experience obtained from the humanitarian sector.

• Carry out minor and major repairs, servicing, and preventive maintenance of vehicles and machinery as instructed by the Senior Workshop Foreman.
• Diagnose mechanical faults accurately and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
• Ensure all repairs and maintenance activities meet manufacturers’ specifications and organizational quality standards.
• Conduct pre- and post-repair inspections to confirm roadworthiness and operational safety of vehicles.
• Support emergency breakdown response when required.
• Ensure safe keeping, labeling, and protection of dismantled vehicle or machine parts during repair works.
• Maintain proper use, cleanliness, and safe storage of tools, workshop equipment, and machinery.
• Immediately report lost, damaged, or malfunctioning tools and equipment to the Senior Workshop Foreman.
• Support inventory control of spare parts by ensuring proper handling and minimizing wastage.
• Comply fully with OSH regulations and AIRD safety policies at all times.
• Properly use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and ensure safe working practices within the workshop.
• Identify, report, and mitigate workplace hazards, near-misses, or unsafe conditions.
• Participate in safety briefings, toolbox talks, and OSH trainings as required.
• Ensure vehicles are not released for operation if they pose safety risks.
• Promote environmentally responsible workshop practices in line with organizational and regulatory requirements.
• Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste, including used oils, lubricants, batteries, filters, metal scraps, and cleaning materials.
• Prevent oil spills, fuel leaks, and environmental contamination; report and address incidents promptly.
• Support recycling and waste reduction initiatives where applicable.
• Accurately complete job cards, maintenance logs, service records, and repair reports.
• Provide timely feedback to the Supervisor on repair status, parts requirements, and recurring faults.
• Support fleet data collection for maintenance planning and performance monitoring.
