Job Description

Legal Officer (Advocate) will provide legal advisory and representation services to the organization. The role involves handling contracts, regulatory compliance, litigation management, corporate governance, and risk mitigation while ensuring that the company’s operations comply with applicable laws and regulations. You will report to the Head of Legal and collaborate with various departments to meet their legal needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day legal advice to management and departments on operational, regulatory, and contractual matters.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies.
  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments affecting the organization and advise on necessary actions.
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and finalize contracts, agreements, MOUs, NDAs, and other legal documents.
  • Ensure contracts protect the organization’s interests and manage legal risks.
  • Maintain a contract repository and track renewals and obligations.
  • Handle and manage litigation, arbitration, and dispute resolution matters.
  • Liaise with external advocates, law firms, courts, and regulatory authorities.
  • Prepare legal notices, replies, pleadings, affidavits, and briefs.
  • Represent the organization before courts, tribunals, and authorities where permitted.
  • Support board and management on corporate governance matters.
  • Draft and review board resolutions, policies, and compliance reports.
  • Ensure adherence to statutory filings and corporate compliance requirements.
  • Identify legal risks associated with business activities and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Conduct legal due diligence for transactions, partnerships, and projects.
  • Support internal audits and investigations when required.
  • Maintain accurate legal records, case files, and compliance documentation.
  • Develop and update standard legal templates and internal guidelines.
  • Conduct legal awareness and compliance training for employees
  • Act as a point of contact for legal queries across departments and present findings to stakeholders clearly and concisely.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in law (LLB).
  • Enrolled Advocate and a member of the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS).
  • At least 3 years’ experience in legal practice or in-house legal role.
  • Experience in corporate, commercial, litigation, or regulatory law.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable laws and legal procedures.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple matters independently.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder management skills.
