Duties and Responsibilities
Org. Setting and Reporting The Arusha Branch of the Office of the Prosecutor (“OTP) of the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (“Mechanism”) in Arusha, Tanzania invites applications for legal internships starting from 15 May 2024 for an initial period of three months and renewable up to a maximum of six months. Please indicate your preferred internship period in your cover letter. The Mechanism was established by the Security Council of the United Nations in 2010 to carry out a number of essential functions of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (“ICTR”) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (“ICTY”), after the completion of their respective mandates.

In carrying out its ad hoc and continuous functions, the Mechanism maintains the legacies of these two pioneering international criminal tribunals and strives to reflect best practices in the field of international criminal justice. The OTP, operating from both branches of the Mechanism, located in The Hague, The Netherlands, and in Arusha, Tanzania, provides legal, judicial, institutional, diplomatic support, assistance to national jurisdictions and administrative support to the Prosecutor of the Mechanism in the execution of his mandated functions. Successful candidates will work under the supervision and direction of legal officers in the OTP of the Arusha Branch. An internship with the Mechanism is full-time and unpaid.

The working hours are Monday to Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Interested candidates may visit the Mechanism’s internship website at https://www.irmct.org/en/recruitment/internship/internship-programme to obtain general information including:

Responsibilities Under the supervision of Senior Legal Officers and Legal Officers in the OTP, Arusha branch,

Legal interns will assist counsel in the OTP with a wide range of functions. Interns may:
• conduct comprehensive legal and factual research;
• assist in the drafting of memoranda on issues of international humanitarian law and international and comparative criminal law and procedure;
• work on a range of issues related to the continuing functions of the Mechanism, including review and contempt investigations and proceedings, and other post-conviction litigation;
• assist in any fugitive tracking related tasks;
• analyse and summarise witness testimony/evidence;
• assisting in providing services to national authorities, and capacity-building initiatives;
• performing tasks such as cite-checking and compiling and collating legal materials, and other tasks as required.


Qualifications/special skills
Candidates must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
• Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent) in Legal fields.
• Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree (Master’s degree) or equivalent, or higher).
• Applicants must be computer literate in standard software applications. No work experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education and advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Please explain how you meet this criterion using examples.
• Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D.

Languages
• English and French are the working languages of the Mechanism. Fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of French is desirable.
