Bulyanhulu Gold Mine is seeking to recruit a Industrial Hygienist to join and grow our team.

Reporting to: Health & Safety Superintendent    

Duration: Permanent

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain, calibrate and operate field and laboratory instruments designed to measure noise, heat, light, ventilation, humidity and air contaminants in the general working environment.
  • Carry out routine personal/ Area monitoring for dust and gas from underground environment and other working areas on daily basis or as directed
  • Observe employees being monitored and take notes to identify potential industrial hygiene issues
  • Prepare samples for laboratory analysis without compromising their integrity
  • Study manuals, directives, professional literature, activity organization and operation and other selected reference materials
  • Able to write comprehensive analytical reports of surveys to inform control programs/processes.
  • Supervising Industrial Hygiene Monitoring activities on site
  • Participate as part of the larger EHS team to ensure Health, Safety and Environmental hazards on site are identified, evaluated and controlled
  • Provide expertise and guidance to Management to ensure that all social and legal responsibilities for protecting employees and contractors’ health in operations are fulfilled through appropriate policies and procedures or specific recommendations
  •  Evaluate Company compliance with regard to state occupational health and safety regulations, laws, rules and codes.
  •  Provide the systems and technical support to meet Barrick’s Global Industrial Hygiene Strategy and Programs.
  • Control Industrial Hygiene budget and expenditure
  • Define and prioritize site specific Industrial Hygiene issues and organize work plan that meets site requirements within available resources; communicate and document results and recommendations; follow-up to ensure recommendations have been implemented and evaluate the results
  • Provide technical advice to the business units to evaluate facilities, process etc with respect to application of Industrial Hygiene monitoring and specific control techniques to reduce or eliminate the risk of illness/injury from occupational hazards.
  • Provide information on regulations, standards, legal compliance and safe work methods to supervisors, workers, and safety professionals on site.
  • Provide management with written report on various health issues as required.
  • Participate in technical audit.
  • Provide technical advice and support to emergency response personnel with regards to potential chemical exposures or other health hazards.
  • Communicate expert knowledge to other EHS members

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Degree in Environmental Health Sciences/Engineering/Chemistry and Biology or Equivalent
  • Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma/Degree in Industrial Hygiene or Occupational Medicine

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • 2- 3 years minimum experience in industrial hygiene working in Mining, Processing or Maintenance areas
  • Experience with database and Microsoft office programs would be added advantage

SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of occupational health standards, codes and regulations.
  •  Good verbal and written communication skills (English and Kiswahili) are essential to interact and build relationships
  • Demonstrate ability and willingness to be an active member of mine rescue team
  • Sound knowledge in Industrial Hygiene systems/programs
  • Knowledge required to administer and manage practices applicable to planning, implementing, and evaluating an industrial hygiene program.
  • Knowledge of methods, procedures and techniques used in collecting and testing samples such as dusts, mists, fumes, vapours, noise, non-ionizing radiation, cold and heat stress and biological agents.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of a variety of complex monitoring and testing equipment.
