Job Title: IT Technicians, 5 Positions

Reports To: Site Engineer

Department: Operations/Projects

Position Purpose

The IT Technician is responsible for the installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of fibre optic and site IT systems for VEGA. The role ensures reliable data communication infrastructure across project sites in compliance with VEGA standards, client specifications, international fibre optic standards, and strict HSE requirements. The technician supports site operations by ensuring secure, efficient, and uninterrupted communication systems.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Fibre Optic Installation & Execution

  • Install fibre optic infrastructure including trenching coordination, ducting, cable laying, blowing/pulling, splicing, termination, and labelling.
  • Install and terminate fibre optic cables in ODFs, patch panels, cabinets, and communication racks.
  • Execute works in accordance with approved drawings, method statements, fibre routing plans, and VEGA technical specifications.
  • Ensure proper cable management, protection, and identification along the project route and site facilities.

Testing, Commissioning & Troubleshooting

  • Conduct fibre optic testing including OTDR testing, power meter testing, continuity checks, and loss measurements.
  • Analyse test results, identify faults, and carry out corrective actions such as re splicing or cable repairs.
  • Support commissioning and handover of fibre optic networks to the client.
  • Troubleshoot fibre, network, and connectivity issues to ensure minimal downtime.

Site IT & Communication Systems Support

  • Install and support site IT systems including network switches, routers, Wi-Fi access points, IP phones, CCTV systems, and access control systems.
  • Configure basic network settings and ensure stable connectivity between site offices, control rooms, and field locations.
  • Support integration of fibre networks with site IT and communication systems.

Compliance, Standards & HSE

  • Ensure all fibre optic and IT works comply with VEGA standards, international fibre optic standards and company procedures.
  • Strictly comply with VEGA HSE requirements, permit to work systems and toolbox talks.
  • Ensure safe handling of fibre cables, tools, testing equipment, and proper disposal of fibre waste.
  • Participate in site inspections, audits, and safety briefings.

Coordination & Team Support

  • Work closely with Site Engineers, ICT Leads, and other technicians to ensure coordinated execution.
  • Coordinate with civil teams during trenching, duct installation, and backfilling activities.
  • Liaise with subcontractors, suppliers, and service providers as instructed.
  • Provide technical guidance to junior technicians and trainees on fibre installation practices.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of fibre routes, splicing schedules, test results, and as-built drawings.
  • Prepare daily progress reports, test reports, and incident reports.
  • Assist in material requests, fibre cable tracking, and inventory management.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, Telecommunications or related field.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in fibre optic installation and testing, preferably on large infrastructure or industrial projects.
  • Strong hands-on experience in fibre splicing, termination, and OTDR testing.
  • Knowledge of structured cabling systems and communication networks.
  • Familiarity with international fibre optic standards and project documentation.
  • Experience working under strict HSE environments.
  • Ability to work independently in remote site locations.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
