Job Purpose

The successful candidate will support the site functional area to effectively implement, comply with, and monitor Health & Safety standards and processes through coaching, guidance, and communication with all relevant stakeholders.

The role involves implementing safety performance and related standards and systems processes, ensuring compliance with applicable legislative and regulatory requirements, and promoting safety culture and awareness.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and facilitate safety risk assessments and work with operations to develop effective mitigation plans.
  • Coach and guide management in the assessment, management, and continuous improvement of Health & Safety performance.
  • Facilitate Health & Safety incident investigations and coordinate verification of closeout actions.
  • Facilitate the closeout of audit findings.
  • Create safety awareness using various fit-for-purpose media, including toolbox talks, noticeboards, and electronic media.
  • Develop safety capability among contractors and seasonal workers through the facilitation of safety induction training and development of training materials.
  • Manage safety induction processes through effective planning, facilitation, and coordination.
  • Conduct inspections and internal audits to oversee and ensure adherence to legislative and IIRMS requirements.
  • Maintain NOSA and external assurance systems by creating and updating procedures, communicating changes to procedures, and auditing compliance.
  • Implement and drive the implementation of safety programmes and plans specific to the area of responsibility.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses using the relevant investigation tool determined according to the severity of the matter.
  • Develop monitoring schedules to ensure compliance with statutory requirements for safety and occupational health.
  • Support workplace risk assessments to identify health hazards such as noise, chemicals, and ergonomic risks, monitor workplace exposures, and implement ongoing surveillance programmes to identify health risks.
  • Provide input into the investigation of occupational health cases, working with employees, management, and healthcare providers to ensure appropriate identification and mitigation of risks.
  • Test and validate inputs into the ABF Annual HSE reporting process to reduce the likelihood of findings.
  • Coordinate effective testing of emergency response protocols.
  • Track safety inspections in Incident Management Systems and facilitate effective closeout.
  • Ensure effective HSE committee meetings are conducted according to schedule by setting up the programme, attending meetings, and making necessary changes to IIRMS as a result.
  • Create safety awareness among communities living on and using the estate, including schools and villages within the estate boundary, through developing and delivering pamphlets, talks, and other awareness materials.
  • Promote and adhere to BU and Group procedures, policies, and guidelines, including those relating to HSE, Competition Law, and Anti-Bribery and Corruption (ABC).

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Safety, Risk Management, or an equivalent field.
  • SAMTRAC or NEBOSH qualification.
  • ISO 9000 / 22000 Lead Auditor qualification is an added advantage.
  • 2 to 3 years’ experience in an operational environment, such as a factory or agricultural setting, working in a Health & Safety role.
  • Training in First Aid and Fire Prevention is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of relevant Occupational Health & Safety legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate and facilitate safety risk assessments and work with operations to develop effective mitigation plans.
  • Coach and guide management in the assessment, management, and continuous improvement of Health & Safety performance.
