Responsibilities or duties
Editorial Quality & Standards
- Edit, refine, and approve copy for print and digital platforms, ensuring accuracy, balance, grammar, style, and clarity.
- Enforce house style, editorial guidelines, and ethical journalism standards.
- Ensure headlines, captions, standfirsts, and pull quotes are accurate, facts, compelling, names, and platform-appropriate.
- Verify facts, figures, names, and sources to minimise corrections and legal risk.
Print & Digital Production
- Oversee daily print pagination and digital publishing workflows.
- Adapt content for different formats, including web, mobile, and social media.
- Ensure stories are optimised for digital consumption, including SEO best practices.
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead and manage the sub-editing team, allocating workloads and managing shifts.
- Mentor and train digital editors, sub-editors, and junior staff.
- Conduct performance reviews and contribute to skills development planning.
- Foster a culture of accuracy, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Newsroom Coordination
- Liaise with reporters, section editors, photographers, and multimedia teams to improve story quality.
- Participate in editorial meetings and contribute to content planning.
Legal & Ethical Compliance
- Ensure compliance with media laws, defamation standards, and editorial ethics.
- Work with legal advisers on sensitive or high-risk stories.
- Ensure corrections and clarifications are handled promptly and transparently.
- Flag potential editorial, ethical, or legal issues and escalate when necessary.

- Work closely with designers, production teams, and digital editors to meet deadlines.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
Academic: Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Mass Communication, English, or a related field.
Experience: 5 years’ newsroom experience, with significant time in sub-editing roles, and digital-first storytelling.
