Role Overview

The Geotechnician will provide essential support to geological exploration programs by assisting geologists in field activities, supervising sampling operations, managing geological data and equipment, and ensuring adherence to safety and QA/QC procedures. The role also includes effective coordination of camp operations to ensure smooth fieldwork execution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist geologists in exploration activities and supervise daily fieldwork.
  • Report any new or significant geological findings observed in the field.
  • Supervise soil and grab sampling activities.
  • Manage field site setup and preparation.
  • Supervise pit and trench siting, sampling, and rehabilitation according to company procedures.
  • Oversee RC drilling to ensure samples are collected and handled correctly.
  • Handle RC sample sampling, labeling, and packing.
  • Ensure safe transport of all samples from field sites to camp.
  • Implement and monitor QA/QC procedures on all samples.
  • Manage and maintain field and geological equipment.
  • Handle diamond drilling cores, including orientation marking, core block labeling, and meter marking.
  • Perform geotechnical logging on diamond cores (Recovery, RQDs, TFF, Roughness, and Infills).
  • Conduct diamond core sampling in accordance with standard procedures.

Communication & Safety Responsibilities

  • Serve as a communication link between field staff and management.
  • Participate in safety meetings and communicate key outcomes to the team.
  • Promote and enforce strict adherence to safety procedures in the field.

Exploration Administration & Camp Coordination

  • Capture and manage geological data accurately, ensuring proper filing of hardcopy records.
  • Manage administrative issues within the exploration department.
  • Coordinate camp operations and logistical activities.
  • Oversee departmental finances and prepare monthly summary reports.
  • Manage staff requirements and ensure adequate resource allocation.
  • Control PPE issuance and maintain accurate records of distribution and returns.
  • Maintain up-to-date inventory records for exploration supplies and equipment.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: Diploma in Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: Fieldwork experience in exploration projects is preferred.
  • Knowledge of soil, grab, pit, trench, RC, and diamond drilling sampling techniques.
  • Strong data management, equipment handling, and reporting skills.
  • Ability to coordinate camp activities and maintain accurate inventories.
