Key Purpose of the Role
The key purpose of this role is to drive sustainable sorghum production within the Dodoma region by supporting farmers to achieve optimal yields, quality, and supply targets aligned with the company’s sourcing mandate.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
The Extension Officer Sorghum will be responsible for supporting farmers, improving production practices, monitoring crop progress, and ensuring that sorghum farming activities are implemented according to recommended standards.
Farmer Mobilization and Registration
The successful candidate will be required to:
- Ensure timely mobilization, recruitment, and registration of sorghum farmers within the assigned region.
- Identify and verify the acreage and corresponding input requirements for the area of operation.
- Maintain an accurate database of seed distribution, seed uptake, planted acreage, and crop yield.
Agronomic Support and Crop Management
The Extension Officer Sorghum will ensure that farmers follow recommended agronomic practices throughout the crop production cycle. Key responsibilities include:
- Ensuring that land preparation, planting, weeding, and harvesting activities are carried out on time and in accordance with recommended agronomic practices.
- Ensuring soil fertility, moisture conservation, and crop rotation practices are implemented by farmers.
- Ensuring that only certified sorghum seed supplied by TBL is planted at the correct seed rate.
- Ensuring correct and timely application of herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides at recommended rates.
- Monitoring the crop throughout the entire growth cycle and providing technical guidance to farmers.
- Identifying abnormalities such as pest infestations or disease outbreaks and advising farmers on appropriate corrective measures.
Technology Adoption and Farmer Development
The role also involves supporting farmers to adopt improved production methods and manage farming as a profitable enterprise. Responsibilities include:
- Promoting the adoption of mechanization, including the use of planters, threshers, and other relevant equipment.
- Disseminating new and improved farming technologies and best practices to farmers.
- Coaching and supporting farmers to manage farming activities as profitable business enterprises.
Input Recovery and Reporting
The Extension Officer Sorghum will also support input recovery and reporting activities by:
- Assisting in the recovery of input costs advanced to farmers.
- Preparing and submitting timely monthly reports, including sustainability-related activities.

Applicants should demonstrate the following skills and competencies:
- Supervisory skills
- Negotiation skills
- Interpersonal skills
- Decision-making and advisory skills
- Strong team-player mindset
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Bachelor of Science Honors degree in Agronomy or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in an agronomy or extension environment.
- Experience working with smallholder and commercial farmers.
- Knowledge of sorghum production systems is an added advantage.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Fluency in English.
- Fluency in Swahili is an added advantage.
