Background

The Environmental Superintendent is responsible for developing and implementing an integrated Environment Management System to ensure that employees and contractors proactively manage environmental matters in line with company standards, procedures, and Tanzanian regulatory requirements. This role ensures best environmental practices across all operations, helping Sotta Mining Corporation Limited (SMCL) maintain its social license to operate while promoting sustainability and regulatory compliance.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and manage environmental programs and compliance functions across the mine.
  • Monitor environmental aspects and impacts, ensuring corrective actions and compliance with legal, corporate, and regulatory requirements.
  • Liaise with government agencies and stakeholders on environmental matters, permits, and compliance issues.
  • Maintain contingency and emergency response plans to protect employee health, the environment, and company assets.
  • Coordinate the collection, analysis, and reporting of environmental data for management and regulatory authorities.
  • Provide guidance and training to employees and contractors on environmental best practices.
  • Promote community relations through environmental outreach and stewardship programs.
  • Assist in the preparation and monitoring of departmental budgets related to environmental programs.
  • Maintain and update the Environmental Management System, Standard Operating Procedures, and Life of Mine Rehabilitation Plans.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline; a master’s degree is an added advantage.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in environmental management within large-scale operations, preferably in mining or extractive industries, with at least 5 years in supervisory roles.
  • Knowledge of Tanzanian mining and environmental regulations.
  • Strong planning, organizational, interpersonal, and ethical standards; proactive and adaptable.
