Position Summary

The African Wildlife Foundation is looking to identify an experienced Environmental Education and Communication Expert for an anticipated Project in the Ruvuma Landscape, Tanzania. The expert will design, deliver, and monitor environmental education, conservation communication, and edutainment interventions that build community understanding of, and support for, human-wildlife coexistence across the 42 target villages of the Ruvuma landscape. The Expert will strengthen the environmental education and outreach capacities of wildlife authorities, district councils and schools, and will ensure that communication approaches are gender-sensitive, locally appropriate and grounded in evidence of what changes attitudes and behaviour toward wildlife. This role reports to the Project Team Lead and will be located in Morogoro, Tanzania.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Project Team Lead and in close coordination with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, the Expert will be responsible for the following:

• Design and implement environmental education and conservation communication outreach programmes for wildlife authorities and district councils, applying gender-sensitive and community-appropriate methodologies.
• Lead the revitalisation of the Malihai Club environmental conservation programme in target schools, including updating curricula and activity materials, training patrons and teachers, and supporting ongoing club activities.
• Develop and adapt environmental education curricula, edutainment content and other communication materials (print, audio-visual and participatory formats) in both English and Swahili, appropriate to rural Tanzanian audiences.
• Design and pilot community-level environmental education and communication interventions in at least 30 of the 42 target villages, in coordination with the project's community mobilisation and land-use-planning teams.
• Support the establishment of sustainable financing and institutional arrangements to sustain environmental education activity beyond the life of the project.
• Facilitate consultations and coordination with government authorities, traditional leaders and community structures to align messaging and build local ownership of human-wildlife coexistence approaches.
• Strengthen media engagement on human-wildlife conflict issues, including contributing to the training of journalists to improve the accuracy of HWC reporting.
• Monitor and evaluate the reach, uptake and effectiveness of environmental education and communication activities, and feed lessons learned into project adaptation and reporting.
• Contribute technical input to project progress reports and work closely with the other national and regional experts in the project's expert pool.

Key Qualifications

We are particularly keen to hear from candidates with the following qualifications and professional experience:

• Master's degree (or equivalent) in Conservation Communication and Environmental Education, Edutainment, Community Development, or Natural Resource Management.
• 5 years of professional experience in environmental education.
• 4 years of professional experience in wildlife and natural resource conservation projects.
• 2 years of professional experience in community development projects in a rural setting.
• 2 years of professional experience working with local governments and traditional authorities.
• 2 years of professional experience in conservation communication.
• 4 years of professional experience in edutainment.
• 2 years of professional experience developing educational programmes.
• 2 years of professional experience monitoring environmental education projects and programmes.
