About the Role

Diageo is seeking a Customs & Excise Manager to manage Customs and Excise activities across its East African footprint, covering Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya.

The successful candidate will implement Customs and Excise strategies and policies across East Africa while providing specialist technical support, managing regulatory relationships and identifying opportunities to improve processes and mitigate business risks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage Customs and Excise activities across Diageo’s East African operations in Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya.
  • Implement Customs and Excise strategies and policies across East Africa.
  • Provide specialist support on customs matters, including product classification disputes, customs and excise classification, customs valuation and Inter-Company Selling Price (ICSP) reviews.
  • Manage Customs and Excise-related queries from customs and excise authorities concerning imported products and raw materials used across East Africa.
  • Manage Customs and Excise aspects of international trade projects to deliver shareholder value and manage potential business exposure.
  • Provide technical support to address inefficiencies and drive process improvements within the Customs and Excise function.
  • Recommend and implement changes to optimize processes, systems, policies and procedures.
  • Monitor changes in customs and excise regulations and standard methodologies.
  • Identify regulatory risks and opportunities and recommend appropriate actions.
  • Provide specialist input to local site excise audits and respond to resulting enquiries.
  • Provide required documentation to regulatory authorities.
  • Coordinate licences and permits with relevant regulatory authorities.
  • Maintain effective relationships with customs and excise authorities.
  • Collaborate with Global Tax, Supply, Legal, Corporate Relations and other business functions to support end-to-end supply chain efficiency.
  • Engage with international and regional trade bodies as required.

  • Global Tax partners and business unit leaders.
  • Global Supply function.
  • Legal.
  • Corporate Relations.
  • Other relevant global and regional functions.

Key External Stakeholders

  • Customs and Excise authorities.
  • Regulatory authorities.

Critical Capabilities

  • Sophisticated knowledge of Customs and Excise.
  • International trade experience.
  • Strong project management and stakeholder communication skills.
  • Strong compliance and ethics mindset.

Experience and Skills Required

  • At least 5 years of experience in Customs and Excise.
  • Experience within a Global Trade or Tax advisory function in a consulting firm or multinational beverage or tobacco manufacturer.
  • Experience in international trade.
  • Data analytics skills, including Power Query and Power BI.
  • Systems experience in SAP or an equivalent system is desirable.
  • Effective project management and implementation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively across diverse cultures and teams.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Strong compliance and ethical standards.
